Scary experience after training

On finishing my first week of 15s (second cycle) I decided to do a set of leg presses to finish up. I was feeling tired and a little queasy after blasting through my routine quickly in a nearly empty gym but had a bit of time left so thought, "What the heck!" I pushed out 15 reps pretty easily and decided to go for 20. Made 20 and reckon I could have gone on to make 25 so was several reps shy of failure.

After this set I was really sucking in air and started to feel a whole lot more queasy. Still, I was done so went out and sat in my car. Feeling ever more nauseous I sat back, closed my eyes and tried to relax, all the while breathing steadily and hoping the feeling would pass.

I opened my eyes and saw... nothing! Well, not quite nothing but everything was really dark and washed with a magenta tinge, almost as if the sun had gone out and there was some sort of very low pinky-red ambient lighting! I closed my eyes and reopened them. No change! Uh oh! I just sat there trying to figure out what the hell was going on and pondering a life of near-blindness. All the while I was still feeling nauseous. I decided not to panic and to wait a while to see what happened. It was a bit like being a malfunctioning Terminator! If little green words had popped up as I looked around then I would have freaked out!

Anyway, after 10 mins or so my vision slowly started to return. The colour information returned first and then the brightness and contrast came back online. After another 5 mins it was as if it never happened. I had forgotten all about feeling queasy so that had passed too.

I think it must have been blood pressure related and will be seeing my GP ASAP. I did make the mistake of eating too soon before my workout - something which I always try to avoid doing. That's why I wasn't overly worried about feeling nauseous. However, the blindness episode was a first and was something I hope never to experience again.

Any of you ever had, or heard of, this before? I'd really appreciate your thoughts. I've never read about this happening but it surely can't be unique to me?

Training tonight went well and without any bad experiences. I was pretty nervous before I started though and didn't bother doing any extra leg presses at the end! Never thought I'd be able to say "I leg pressed till I went blind!" :D

LOL

That sometimes happens during 15's, I think you pushed past you threashold, even though it felt like you could do more.

Whilst you could be right and it could be BP related, I doubt your doc will find anything then, but it is always worth a try!

15's can make you puke...literally...although it has not yet happened with me, I have felt nauseous, but sitting down and breathing hard and maybe a little cold water helped, some of my previous partners though have "hurled" before specially after deadlifting.

Yep, you are right eating less than 1/2 hour before training not a good idea, so that would put you in indigestion territory, which can also cause blackouts and nausea.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your thoughts Fausto. Still waiting to see my Doc. Appointment is still a week away. Meanwhile, training is going well with no repeat of the experience so I'm hoping it was a one off and mainly down to indigestion. It was such a freaky thing though, so still want a check-up.

Cheers,

Doc has given me a clean bill of health - BP and heart rate fine. He has booked me an appointment with a specialist at my local eye infirmary for a few further checks.

Made my day when my doc couldn't fit the usual BP arm wrap round my arm and had to find his larger one! All thanks to HST :D

When I get up from laying or sitting down. Every thing goes dark just as you described it. Then I start to get dissy and alittle wobbly. Once I fell onto the sofer as this happened. When I went to the docters about it as it happens quite often, even now infact it happend yesterday. The doc just said its my blood not getting to my brain quick enough as I get up.

Holy butt badgers, Bren! You get this a lot!!

As you seem to get it when you change your orientation, it certainly sounds like a blood pressure issue. Anything out of the ordinary about yours? I do recall very occasionally having had a light-headed/dizzy feeling when I got up quickly from lying down. I've never had my vision pack up because of this though. You have my sympathy.

I'll report back here to let you know what the eye infirmary guy has to say about it (no date as yet).

When I was younger and had a BP of 95/60, I would often lose my vision after standing up. Stress has caused my BP to rise, so I don't experience it much now.

That happened to me a couple times when I was a kid as well. I vividly recall one incident, when I was watching Terminator 2 after it first came to video and stood up from my couch too fast. My vision went black and suddenly I was on the floor. That was fun.

Well after reading this thread I'm booking an eye exam. I know I went to the doc and all but still. Well I suppose what happens to me is out of the ordinary I guess. My head and face starts to burn as it happens aswell. When it happens I just say to my self "oh dang" and kinda look to sit back down quick. Hasn't happend in the gym though.
