Drop sets vs. lowering volume

I've got a question to ask the authors of the HST FAQ E-Book, presumably Bryan. In the one part, it is claimed that lowering set-volume as weight increases is OK as long as it's still minimum effective volume, i.e. as many sets as one can do with a given load while still maintaining the weight and training frequency.

But in the part, it's suggested that in order not to decrease the activity of the ERK 1/2 signaling protein, which facilitates hypertrophy, a person should utilize drop-sets, thus providing the necessary metabolic work.

So, where the truth lies?
