My 5 rep max for shoulder press is 45 lbs per dumbell. When I use the machine, my max is about 10 lbs heavier. I assume its because all those stabilizers muscles have less work with a machine, thus allowing me to do more weight.
Would switching to a machine from free weights towards the end of cycle make sense?

In general, free weights will build stronger, fuller and more practical muscles than machines. Machines are better for isolating problem areas or where safety is an issue.

I"m still wondering about this. Wouldnt the higher load from the machines be beneficial?

read carefully the customizing-thread and you'll know
