Increased Body Weight = More Daily Calories?

I have a question that hopefully has not been asked here recently…
In one of the articles on “Eating for Size” it states: “To increase whole body mass, you must ingest more than just maintenance calories.” If one increases their body weight over the years while performing HST (or other weightlifting systems for that matter), will one’s caloric maintenance level increase necessitating one to have to ingest more calories during their lifetime to maintain their increased body weight? The HST BMR formula is based on one’s current body weight. As one’s body weight increases so does BMR. Will a person’s gains dissipate if they do not maintain the new increased caloric intake?
Thanks,
-d

If you gain muscle, then "yes" you must eat more.

Put it like this. If you, at current weight, need to eat x calories to maintain and y to gain weight, then you will at some period in time need y calories to maintain this. If you want to gain even more you have to eat yet more.

This was probably a lousy explanation, so what you should do is go to the BMR calculator type in 80kg, note the response, type in 90kg and compare. At 90kg you will need more calories to support the added muscle.

However, if you're gaining fat, you do not need another burger with fries to maintain the added adipose tissue ;)

Yes, the extra muscle will require more calories to maintain.

However, for most people that will not necessitate more food -- it will simply mean that less of the excess that is already consumed will be turned into fat!

But the added weight in fat that you'll be carrying will also translate into increased caloric needs. Obviously muscle does play a much bigger role in this, but still....

Thanks for pointing that out, Restless. I tried to generalize...

That doesn't usually play out IRL. The added weight is also a disincentive to move. Unless you force yourself to still take the stairs, walk just as much and as far, don't sit more often, etc., the extra weight will not cause much compensatory calorie burn.

Ah, but provided all other thing are equal it will, just try doing all your everyday activities holding a 10 or 15 kg plate.

All things being equal, yes. But if I strap a 15 Kg plate to myself, I doubt I'll want to do all my daily activities, and IRL, neither will most people. Side issue: how many nested quotes can we make here?
