View Full Version : Where'd you get your username?

Bryan Haycock

I've always wondered about how people come up with their "user names", or the name they use on the message boards. Sure, some are obvious like, "BeHyuge", but others I just can't seem to figure out. So let us know how you came up with your username. http://www.hypertrophy-specific.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I have a very nutty and wacky best friend, who for some reason would make up silly names and there and there out of nowhere and would keep repeating them over and over. Keep in mind, this is from the ages of about 12 to 17. He is a little more mature now.

Mine is a sort of inside joke amongst my friends and I. When we were younger, we sort of developed our own slang, based on stupid things that were said. If something is cool, it's insane, so I guess that makes me a cool guy http://www.hypertrophy-specific.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif

mikeynov = Michael Novak, obviously, my actual name.

'mikey' and 'nov' being both the nicknames my friends tend to call me merged :P

[xeno]Julios
11-26-2003, 12:53 AM
When I was in highschool about 8 years ago, my best friend and I used to hang out at the Second Cup on davisville and yonge in toronto, and they played Julios Iglesias there. We grew to love the place and nicknamed it julio's - then at the end of '97 when i got my first computer, i installed icq and was faced with the task of choosing a user name, so i chose julios, since it meant something to me. (pronounced joolios though not hoolio like it's supposed to)

xeno is my gaming clan ( www.xenoclan.com ), although I haven't played for months, so my online nick became [xeno]Julios, and i've stuck with it on forums.

11-26-2003, 09:15 AM
Mine is a reflection of a hobby; I do a lot of soccer refereeing. Arbitro is Latin in orgin, meaning "arbiter" or "judge", or in this case, "referee." Being addressed as "arbitro" is common from Latin & Hispanic players -- among other terms if the game isn't going the way they want. http://www.hypertrophy-specific.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Mindwraith
11-26-2003, 10:06 AM
Mine is partially the result of endless attempts to find a name I like on Hotmail without having to use a stupid "I'm not original nor the only one" number after it. A wraith is a ghost according to Websters. Some D&D type games claim a wraith is a vampiric type of ghost. The mind portion could mean its a vampiric ghost which slowly drains your mind of sanity. But in reality it just makes a cool name for Quake and CounterStrike or Urban Terror.

What a fun thread, Bryan! http://www.hypertrophy-specific.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

Kate's pretty obvious... given name is Kathleen.

My AOL IM is IronDiva55, the 55 being my "model year" as I am not the original or only IronDiva http://www.hypertrophy-specific.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif My eldest daughter is an accomplished dancer and at one time was nicknamed the "Tap Diva" by her instructor, so I borrowed the idea from her. Since then, my sister (who raises horses instead of children... smart woman) changed her screen name to EquiDiva, and my mother, who is a Mary Kay lady, is PinkDiva.

Guess we're a whole family of Divas...

I occasionally sign on to other sites as "herHUGEness". She's kind of an alter ego though, and that's all I'll say about that...

Mine was my CB radio handle (back in the 1980s) when I was driving for a living. Back then, I chose the name from the movie 'Dune.' Remember the Navigators and the Spacing Guild? They used their minds to 'fold' spacetime and move spaceships around the universe, and thus made space travel possible. Since I was always on the move, the name stuck real well.

Smee
01-28-2004, 04:47 AM
A Radio Station, was running a competition to find contestants who could come up with words that were not found in any English Dictionary yet could still use these words in a sentence that would make logical sense; the prize being a return trip for two to Bali for a week.
The DJ, Sam, had many callers, the following two standing out:
DJ: QFM, what's your name?
Caller: Hi me name's Justin.
DJ: Justin , what is your word?
Caller: "Goan" spelt G, O, A, N.
DJ: We are just checking that (pause)... and you are correct Dave, Goan is certainly a word not found in the English Dictionary. Now the next question, for a trip for two to Bali, is: What sentence can you use that in that would make logical sense?
Caller: Goan screw yourself! Ha Ha Ha
At this point the DJ cuts the caller short and announces that there is no place for that sort of language on a family show.
After many more unsuccessful calls the DJ takes the following caller:
DJ: QFM, what's your name?
Caller: Hi me name's Jeff.
DJ: Jeff , what is your word?
Caller: "Smee" spelt S, M, E, E.
DJ: We are just checking that (pause)... and you are correct Jeff, Smee is certainly a word not found in the English Dictionary. Now the next question, for a trip for two to Bali, is: What sentence can you use that in that would make logical sense?
Caller:It smee Justin! Goan screw yourself Ha Ha Ha!
PS. Justin or Justinw are so often used I tend to use Smee.

majutsu

Majutsu = Mara + jutsu = devil's way literally

But it more suggests a left-hand path, or magic/sorcery. I used to compete in jujitsu and go (asian wrestling and asian chess respectively), my real name is very western, american and hard to say/grasp for an asian. So to introduce myself I made up a name, "magic" in japanese, ala magic johnson. It was very catchy, and gave me quite an aura with my opponents. I actually picked it randomly from an english-japanese dictionary, but the more I learn about the mythological roots of that word the cooler it is . . . http://ankokumon.chaosmagic.com/majutsu.htm for an in-depth discussion.

The Pencil Neck
03-25-2004, 05:28 PM
I started posting in the misc.fitness.weights newsgroup back around '98. I asked a question about some stuff my doctor had told me I needed to do, ways I need to change my routine. I went to the internet to find a group that was more knowledgeable about lifting and found MFW.

After making some posts and partaking in a couple of discussions, I decided it would be a fun group to be a part of and a place where I could learn a lot. But I was very self-conscious that I was not "big". I was learning a lot about lifting and figured I could help field some of the beginner "read the faq" type questions so I started using the signature: Watson (the pencil neck) Davis.

After about a year or so of posting, some people started giving me challenges/tasks to perform so that I could drop "the pencil neck" from my signature.

I got into powerlifting because of that group. I went to my first meet as a validation of my lifts. I totalled 920. Six months later, I went to my second meet and total just over 1000. After that, some of the regulars were hounding me to lose "the pencil neck", so I became "Half Ton"... because I'd totalled 1000#. http://www.hypertrophy-specific.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

But then I got tired of all the noobs thinking that I weighed 500# (which would have been QuarterTon but math is hrd) and after some discussion, I became The Ninja of Nice.

I got tired of that and eventually went back to The Pencil Neck.

And here I am.

You know me? As long as you don't believe Lyle and Elzi's lies we'll be OK.

I'm surprised when people recognize me from MFW. I was working with this drummer a few years ago and he asked a friend of his (Brett Garsed, http://www.brettgarsed.com ) to take a listen to some tunes we were working on. And Brett, who's a gawd of a guitar player, sez,"You mean Watson THE PENCIL NECK Davis!!!" http://www.hypertrophy-specific.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

My real name is Hkan Karlsson. I used to live in LA a few years ago. The telephone company there misread my name and thought it was Haskan Kaluson!!! I type bad but not that bad!! Ever since then Ive called myself haskan on the net. Its kinda easier too, since not many have , , on their computers.

Stretchman
05-12-2004, 01:26 PM
Stretch is my road name when I ride my bike, because I am 6'4" and used to weigh about 195 lbs. Now, at 260 it doesn'treally fit like it used to, but I've kept it all these years, so I stick with it. The reason I added the man is two fold. Firstly, a firend always used to call me that, and stretch is always taken when people try and find a username. So I made it stretchman, and it stuck on the net. Been using it for a while.

Realised fairly quickly that it was SLOW upside down, but nonetheless it made me laugh to myself. I happened to be thinking about a nick for a chat room on the same day, so went with MO75, and it's kinda become my online identity... Coincidentally, '75 is my year of birth...

Mine's from my old baseball days.....I was a second baseman, and I had this "problem" (its not a problem if it works....right?) of fielding considerably more than my alotted range, something like over 2/3 of the infield.

The coach realized I was quick enough to pull it off, so he let me continue having my fun so long as he could call me 'Range'.

my name is a reference to Naked Lunch, a movie by Cronenberg based on a book by William S Burroughs. when i read the book, i discovered the term was not actually used. too bad, a literary reference would sound more sophisticated :-).

anyway, beyond referring to the term as it is used in the movie (dry insecticide that the protagonist's wife was using as a hallucinogenic), it also conveys some sense of humility (i picture the dusty remains of a long since dessiccated insect being blown away by a gentle current - what's more self-effacing than that). besides, i'm a programmer, which makes it seem all the more apopros (as if a miracle cure you sprinkle on code to cure it of bugs).

some of my friends actually know me as 'bug'. one even accidentally nicknamed his kid after my moniker (he didn't realize it at first).

And this page tells you what he is up to lately:
http://www.adultswim.com/shows/brak/index.html
In Summary - Brak used to be an evil space pirate and enemy of Space Ghost (back in the 80s) One minute he was just a happy space pirate, looting and pillaging, and then POOF! He's as dumb as a doornail. So now he has his own television show.

So why am I using his name...I dunno, I think he is silly and funny and his crazy songs make me smile. Ever since I saw Brak on the late night talk show "Space Ghost Coast to Coast", he has been my favorite (so I have been using this username for a long time). And now he is in the line-up with other genre-bending shows in the Adult Swim block on Cartoon Network.

Once I was having lunch with a friend. He told me he wanted to run a marathon. I told him how I had done it before, and I started telling him everything about my training. And I mean everything. I would talk for like 10 minutes straight; he would ask a question, and I'd talk for another 10 minutes straight. At the end of lunch he said sincerely but with a chuckle, "Thank you, Master Yoda." It kinda fit because he had no idea I knew so much about it or was even capable of talking that much... just like when Luke didn't know Yoda was Yoda when he first met him. Since I always liked Yoda I kept the name.

Well, since I am new on the forums, this seems to be a nice thread to start :>

I started using a nickname playing Quake in the early nineties, since the one I had chosen because of it being used by my high school friends seemed to be in use an awful lot, I switched.

So I started using Uncle Les (= a character from Peter jackson's "Braindead" movie. I loved the character since he is basically an annoying bastard, but when it comes down to hacking up some zombies, he delivers the goods http://www.hypertrophy-specific.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif )

This was transmogrified by fellow Quakees into uncLez, so there ya go :>

New here, but just found this sticky http://www.hypertrophy-specific.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I've been using it for a really long time now. Actually, since the first ISP I ever signed up with. I had to pick a name, couldn't think of anything that second, looked down at my dog, and thought of it, hehe. Basically, I used to own, God rest her soul, a female Rottweiler named Lex. Hence, the name, Rotlex. http://www.hypertrophy-specific.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

They used to call me "Mr Muscles" where I work. But they knew I didn't like it. So there's a guy there whom we use to call "Zeus" since he's the king of computers there. So one day he said to me: "Since I'm Zeus and, in here your the king of muscles, we're gonna call you "Atlas" (all greek myths stuff)". So, here it is!

Slofut... sort of a phonetic derivation of slow foot. Humorous take on Eric Claptons' nickname "slowhand", I'm a drummer (and bassist) and I've never been able to get my right (kickdrum) foot to go as fast as I'd like it to. So since the inception of internet forums I've always been slofut. http://www.hypertrophy-specific.info/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

etothepii.. it's a math thing
e is the base of the natural logarithm. It's a fundamental constant used in calculus.
pi .. you know, 3.14159... It's a fudamental constant in geometry.
i is the square root of -1. Also called the imaginary number. It's a fundamental constant in algebra.

The expression, e^(pi*i) is quite interesting. It simplifies to a value of -1.

Because I used to weigh 300lbs and once I understood how my body worked and what I needed to do to burn the fat off it came off very quickly. *More quickly than I could replace the clothes. *Friends would remind me it was time to get new clothes again by saying, "the vagrant is back", it stuck with me even though everything fits now. TunnelRat

TunnelRat is simple enough. I used to go down into the tunnels in Viet Nam.

I wasn't a real full-time Tunnel Rat -- those guys were all crazy and a lot braver than I. Rather I was a rifle platoon leader with the First Cavalry Division.

I had to pick the guys who walked point -- the ones most likely to get hurt. So when we'd come upon a tunnel, since I was far and away the shortest, smallest guy in the company, I'd take my turn and go in instead of sending someone else. I figured it was only fair.

My men called me "The TunnelRat" as sort of an honorific.

All my friends had cool nick names like JD and Kage and Chance. I never had a nick name so I spent for ever trying to come up with one that fit. I first settled on Chilly from Get Shorty, LOL, I liked the attitude of the character. But it didnt have the power I was hoping for.
Then one day I was watching a movie and the character Sphinx was introduced. I decided that was my new nickname, and yes if you were guessing gone in sixty seconds as the movie your'e right. http://www.hypertrophy-specific.info/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Although I thought it was cool when I first came to Japan (partially because I was so excited about studying the language), I would really like to change my username.

My best friend used to make fun of me for wanting to go to Japan, and at the same time, he also used to make fun of me for dating multiple girls at once. So, he used to call me a 'pimp'. And it just naturally progressed to Japanese pimp after I decided to go to Japan way back at the end of 2001.

The word for Japan in Japanese can be pronounced either nihon or nippon. The word for pimp in Japanese is pronounced ponbiki. 'Japanese pimp' in Japanese would actually be 'nippon no ponbiki', but as a play on words and so no Japanese person would likely figure it out, I shortened it to 'nipponbiki'.
