Tribulus Terrestris - marketed at bodybuilders to:

- Increase testosterone production
- Increase muscle mass/strength

I found an interesting article on this stuff in a womens' health magazine. Although searching the internet there are mixed opinions to its effectiveness.

Has anyone used this stuff and experienced mass gains?

I've been using it for around 6 months in the concoction/brand "Testojack". This particular brand is ZMA +trib. At first I felt some libido increase (mild), but only the first few days - I only continue because the grocery store that I get my groceries delivered from carries no other ZMA and it's just so convenient to order from there as opposed to driving to GNC or some such place .

If it has an effect it's hard to tell , separating the ZMA effect from the trib effect would be impossible as far as test enhancement , I can feel the ZMA cuz my nightly dose ( I take a day dose and a night dose) leads to the vivid dream thing others have reported so I know that parts working, as for the trib - if anything it's negligable.

Because it is so cheap I started taking it a few weeks ago just to try and increase libido. Which it did for the first week. Since then I have felt absolutely nothing. And I did not notice any increase in LBM over what I was making prior to taking it. So I probably won't be wasting any more money on it.

The only mixture I think you find on the internet is people who have a vested interest in selling it claim that it works and people who do scientific studies have found no evidence that it increases testosterone.

If you are looking for a legal way to increase muscle mass/strength then your best bet is creatine. Otherwise you'll have to look for stuff that hasn't been made illegal yet or already is illegal.

The Effect of Five Weeks of Tribulus terrestris Supplementation on Muscle Strength and Body Composition During Preseason Training in Elite Rugby League Players.Rogerson S, Riches CJ, Jennings C, Weatherby RP, Meir RA, Marshall-Gradisnik SM.
Rogerson, S., C.J. Riches, C. Jennings, R.P. Weatherby, R.A. Meir, and S.M. Marshall-Gradisnik. The effect of five weeks of Tribulus terrestris supplementation on muscle strength and body composition during preseason training in elite rugby league players. J. Strength Cond. Res. 21(2):348-353. 2007.- Tribulus terrestris is an herbal nutritional supplement that is promoted to produce large gains in strength and lean muscle mass in 5-28 days (15, 18). Although some manufacturers claim T. terrestris will not lead to a positive drug test, others have suggested that T. terrestris may increase the urinary testosterone/epitestosterone (T/E) ratio, which may place athletes at risk of a positive drug test. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of T. terrestris on strength, fat free mass, and the urinary T/E ratio during 5 weeks of preseason training in elite rugby league players. Twenty-two Australian elite male rugby league players (mean +/- SD; age = 19.8 +/- 2.9 years; weight = 88.0 +/- 9.5 kg) were match-paired and randomly assigned in a double-blind manner to either a T. terrestris (n = 11) or placebo (n = 11) group. All subjects performed structured heavy resistance training as part of the club's preseason preparations. A T. terrestris extract (450 mg.d(-1)) or placebo capsules were consumed once daily for 5 weeks. Muscular strength, body composition, and the urinary T/E ratio were monitored prior to and after supplementation. After 5 weeks of training, strength and fat free mass increased significantly without any between-group differences. No between-group differences were noted in the urinary T/E ratio. It was concluded that T. terrestris did not produce the large gains in strength or lean muscle mass that many manufacturers claim can be experienced within 5-28 days. Furthermore, T. terrestris did not alter the urinary T/E ratio and would not place an athlete at risk of testing positive based on the World Anti-Doping Agency's urinary T/E ratio limit of 4:1.

Thanks for the study Dan.

Have you seen any where they use a larger dose? I'm only asking because most claims I have seen say you need about 1000mg per day to have any affect.

Thanks for your responses.

So in conclusion Tribulus Terrestris is not effective for gains in strength or muscle mass - tho it may make you a bit more horny

I don't know how these unscrupulous companies and products can get away with such false claims - no integrity.

Cheers guys

And the placebo effect can't be ruled out as responsible for that . My "libido effect" was so negligable as to possibly have been wishfull thinking and very short lived (as in a few days).

Not in humans.

Antonio did one using 3. something or other mg/kg BW/day but still no where near 1000mg.

Another one I remeber is they gave three groups

Grp 1, ~10mg/kg/day
Grp 2, ~20mg/kg/day
Grp 3 placebo

Tested for Testosterone, androstenedione and leutinizing hormone levels and found didly squat diffrence between the test groups after several weeks.

For a 100Kg man that would be 2000mg/day so twice the 1000mg you mention.
