Alternative Lat Exercises

Lat pulldowns/Pull ups cause the tendon in my right forearm to flare up.  I've had a long running battle with it in the past.  Not sure why my arm extending over my head fully is what causes it flare, but it does.  I've tried using wrist straps and hooks but it still causes the tendon to flare up.

So...any ideas on alternative exercises or do you think that seated rows hit the lats good enough?

Any suggestions are welcomed

Have you tried using a neutral grip? I have a right forearm issue right now; chins and regular pull-ups are painful but neutral grip pull-ups are OK.

Nope...didn't even think of that one...will give it a try tomorrow and let you know how it goes though.

I have 2 lat bars though, one is the traditional style and one is wide with the grips facing in. Perhaps my hands being closer with a close grip pulldown would change it enough to prevent the pain from happening.

bent rows, dynamic row or pendelay rows are always good.
As far as pull downs have you tried using a V-bar? That will give you the neutral grip that lol was refering to.

You might also want to try a thumbless grip. A lot of people find that this helps them remove the arms from the pull and use more of the lat.

I have a v-bar so I'm going to give it a try tomorrow, I've used straps and with a thumbless grip. I think it has to have something to do with my arm being stretched above my head. It also irks it when I do single arm above the head tricep extensions.

It sure does suck getting old!!!

Thanks for the advise guys.

Have you tried one of those that you wear on the forearm for tennis elbow? Maybe keeping a little pressure on it will help.
I also wonder if it could be a shoulder issue. When I was a field technician a lot of my work was overhead and it would give me pains in my hands and wrist. Doing shoulder dislocations and improving my shoulder mobility really helped. I dont know if it was a matter of something getting pinched off due to the alignment of the tight joint or what. It just seemed to help.

I have a tennis elbow brace also, it helps, but I need to figure out a way to work around the injury. Continuing to do the same movement with the brace isn't going to fix the problem in the long run.

I know it's not a shoulder issue, just due to the fact that it's a torn tendon that I've been dealing with for several years. But that's a whole other story in itself.

I did the v-bar pulldowns today and had no problems, felt a lot different from using the traditional pulldown bar, but no pain in my arm so I have absolutely no complaints.

Thanks for all the help

Try some dynamic stretching before your WO as well.
