I am starting to bike. How long should I go? Say 3 times a week. A real bike not a sationariy one.

Thanks in advance

Bob

i would think the same, if not a little longer than you would jog. of coarse it all depends on the inclines in your area.

I live on an island off the west coast of florida in the gulf of mexico...flat as a pancake.

That is my issue -----it is too easy. But I have a goofy leg from an old ski injury and now that I am 40lbs heavier (thanks to HST) I can go for a good run... but the next day my ankle "talks to me".

Would love to know what I should do. I don't need to be Lance Armstrong... but I do want to lean out a bit.

hey bob

i see your really looking for a answer and im surprised some of the more dedicated cyclists out there havent responded. i havent ridden consistantly in many yrs but it really comes down to what kind of riding you want to do. i know you said its flat there but with all the gear options you can take a 2hr stroll or a 30 min race and burn similar amounts of cals. you can check out some cal burn/activity sites on the web to get an idea of how much you want to burn and couple that with how much time you have. riding a couple 2-3 days a week at a modest pace it wont take long to round into biking shape (same as getting back into the gym after a long layoff) and from there you can change it up into long rides, short quick ones, interval type stuff etc etc.
if im remembering right i read some stuff a few yrs back about running not being good for maintaining quad mass. something about the jarring effect but i do believe it applied to folks running quite a bit, probably more than 15-20 miles a week. cycling on the other hand was quite beneficial since it eliminated the jarring and added all that blood flow.(i guess just look at the quads of dist. runner and cyclists).

anyway, good luck. i just visited florida (tampa) for the first time a short time ago. great scenery. both the stationary and the 2 legged kind.

Just get on the bike and ride consistantly.
Train for endurance, i.e. 60-70% of your max heart rate.
Just put dextrose in your water bottle if you ride for longer than 1.5 hours.
If you keep your heart rate low, i.e. 60-70%, you won´t have to worry too much about cortisol, hence the dextrose in your water bottle.
IF you start making it real hard on the legs, you´ll start eating muscle.
Watch out for hurricanes.

Calories burned while biking = .28*(weight-lbs)*(miles)

If your trying to cut, a bike at the end of the day to finish off the calories to give your deficit would work.

Start slowly and progress the distance as you improve.

One you find a nice route, set goals such as time to beat for that route. Try shaving time off everytime you do it.

I would bike in the 10 - 20km range but it depends on your injury.

Bob, I would say an hour a day would be a good time frame. Unless you are going high intensity I say just ride at moderate pace enjoy the scenary and just have a good time.

If you are not pushing it that hard then an hour will not burn too many calories but it will prob burn enough to lean you out some.

Secondly I am picturing were you live in my head....and I am just flat out jealous...sounds like a mini paradise!
