Bulk or cut?

What are your goals? If you want to be lean and look good without a shirt I'd cut first then slow bulk. If you want muscle gain I'd go for a bulk and start cutting when 15% bf is reached.

Thing is when I get lean my ribs show. I want to be lean but I don't want to look like I'm starving.

Hi there PeyZS I saw your reply.. thanks

yeah thats a weird thing. my ribs are showing a bit when i extend/stretch and I don't even have a six pack yet.

you seem very conflicted. I would start with a recomp approach, either IF or UD2.0 depending on your lifestyle, and then see how you feel after a month. At that point it'll be very clear what you should do.

You'll either:

1) Be happy with your slow muscle gain/loss and continue
2) Be able to decide which you care more about and know exactly how to tweak calories to get it.

But remember. Count count count count, record record record, especially if you're carb sensitive (which I don't think you are, but in a recomp, this becomes more important anyway, the type, quantity and timing of your carb intakes.)

check out my training log, as bluejacket and I have been chatting about recomp and cutting/bulking approaches in this record. we seem to agree that cyclical method (IF or 24/24 or ud2.0) works best.

do you want to enter comps etc,if not IMO dont get on the cut/bulk cut/bulk bandwaggon i personaly dont think its healthy, its basicly yoyo dieting,if you are maintaning your weight for now, then slightly increase your cals see how much muscle you gain and if your happy with it,once you get what you want stay at maintanance level,do you really want to be dieting all your life i know i dont and never have.

Yeah I suppose I am conflicted right now. I cut down from 190 lbs. and 18% body fat down to 165 and < 10% bf. I did a bulk using Starting Strength and my lifts went way up, and I added 7 lbs. of LBM. But also 5 lbs. of fat. I want to eat enough that I can do strength training and make progress in my lifts from week to week.

I have no desire to compete but I would also love to be shredded.

Having a six pack is a dream of mine that will not die.

banderbe, bear in mind that being shredded is not a particularly healthy state to be in for most folks (some folks are genetically very lean) so your body will fight you all the way as you try to get below 8% body fat.

Competitive bbers only get in a shredded state for a comp and then it's usually with the aid of 'assistance'. It's quite possible to remain in a lean condition (rather than shredded) all year round but it will be much harder to make much in the way of lean mass gains if you attempt to do so.

and much harder to enjoy food and good drink on football days!

this may sound pathetic, but the coming football season is going to have MAJOR influence on my dietary set up/schedule for the fall!

I'm trying to plan a bulk right now so that sunday ends up as a maintenance or maintenance+ day! LOL
