Deadlift question

Hi, I'm new to the boards. Referred from BB.com

anyway, I'm starting hst monday, and what frequency should deadlifts be done? 3x a week seems very taxing.

A lot of guys either alternate Squats with Deadlifts (every 2nd workout), or alternate Squats, SLDLs and DLs. I wouldn't advise doing them 3x per week either, but do one leg exercise each workout (alternate focus quads/hams)

During the 15s and 10s you could deadlift 3 x weekly but if you are squatting as well it can get a bit much for the lower back.

What has worked well for me this year is to squat and SLDL 3 x weekly during 15s and 10s and then drop SLDLs during 5s and beyond, changing to squats Mon & Fri and deadlifts on Wed only.

I think it also depends on the loads you are using. Once squats are over 300lbs and deads are over 400lbs, deading once a week and squatting twice a week is probably plenty for most folks. Well, it is for me.

My joints and lowerback don't like it if I try to do more than this.

I'm deadlifting the HST way every other day, along with squats and stiff legged deadlifts. No problems here from it.

Remember, if you are doing HST, you aren't working at your maximum ability except for one day every 2 weeks. It's a rather taxing day but then the next workout is for less reps with lighter weight. This is how you work your way up to the heavy without getting overtaxed.

Agree with Vagrant. I forget that it's when extending the 5s (which I like to do) that it gets most difficult to keep both deads and squats going. That's when you are pushing more with with loads much closer to your maximums for 5s and heavier. Deads are brutal then.

good stuff, thanx. I like this idea of wed deads when it gets heavy.

Deadlifting 400+ 3 days a week would be a killer, even if submax weight is used, well, maybe not for stevejones

. I think as the dead gets heavier, the frequency needs to be tapered. I also deadlift only on Wed. and never go near failure, but there is still fatigue. There is a big difference in what I can clean the day after deadlifting.

lol

I remember doing a high volume program that had me deadlifting twice per week for 2 weeks and then once during the 3rd week, then repeat. I was fine with that and didn't get burned out until I was strong enough to be doing 8-11 reps with 405+, and that is when I remember where all of a sudden it was very hard to deadlift twice per week. At a max of 495+ for 8-11 reps (heavier weight for lighter reps) there was no way I could deadlift more than once per week without getting burned out. I've been a "once per week" dead lifter for a long time now. Just no other way I can do it. I can't even fathom three times per week, I've never done that.

Edit: That's when I was working to failure all the time, but even on HST I get burned out if I deadlift more than once per week. I can squat twice per week just fine, but deadlifting kills me. Don't know why. I think it's because I'm closer to my 'genetic limit' on deadlifts than I am on squats, but am not sure.
