Dips - movement

I was told by a trainer of nfl players that dips should be done perfectly erect and that leaning foward makes the movement much easier and less result producing. I feel like leaning forward a bit hits my pecs more. I'm wondering if we were talking about two different things, hypertrophy vs. functunal strength. Can anyone shed some light on this?

I think it is a matter of which muscles get worked more by which poistion.

I agree that leaning forward hits your chest more, standing upright will get your triceps more.

you can always check ex-rx to verify.

Does this NFL trainer regard dips as a chest or tricep exercise?

Said it before, say it agin: wide grip/head down/back arched is chest. Narrow grip/head up/back straight is triceps. Unfortunately, some gyms have only one set of bars or two that are almost the same width, and they are usually tricep stance. Some places have a "V" bar where you can pick how wide you wanna go.

They had one of those v shaped dip stations at my gym...there were like 5 people at the gym that ever used it. Recently they've been remodeling and they got rid of it....

My experience with dips is that you should be able to feel if you are hitting the chest.

I agree with quadancer. If you want to put more stress on your chest, use a wide grip and try to lean forward while performing the exercise (head down). And yes, you should be able to feel it if you are hitting the chest.
