French Press vs. Standing BB Tricep Ext.

So I was working out with my dad the other morning as he has starting coming to the gym, and we felt like doing a couple arm iso's for fun since it was Friday and all lol. I told him to try doing a french press, or skullcrusher, and he was asked why would he do that when he could do a standing BB tricep extension. He was worried about actually crushing his skull ;-). I've always heard that french presses and dips utilized the most muscle fibers for triceps, and therefore were the best for overall growth.

Other than it being a different angle, what is the difference between the two in conjunction with which tricep heads it uses and which would you rate as being more effective. Or, an exercise with an even closer angle would be maybe a cable tricep pushdown... Are any of these really any "better" than than the other?
