Hi All

Im a thai boxer and hope to enter a fight next year but i think im underweight, im 27 and i weight 62-63kg.

I really need to build more mass around my shoulders and traps but dont have any guidance on how to go about achieving this.

Im not looking to get really big or bodybuild, just looking to get that fighters frame.

Please can somebody tell me if there is any such routine for this.

Thanks

You didn't mentiong how tall you are at that weight. But I would recommend working more on functional strength and power for fighting rather than size.

I agree about functional strength over size, I'd rather be small, light, fast and strong as hell and fight in a lower weight catagory, unless thai boxers don't have weight classes, in which case you'd want to be as big and tough as possible.

For what you're after I recommend deadlifts with a shrug at the top, military press, push press, and clean and press. All big weight exes that use the shoulders/traps, and will build mass and strength there.

"Heavyrope" jump rope training (interspersed with speed skipping) should give you alround useable mass in the shoulder area. If you're a cheapskate like me, you could take 8-9ft of garden hose, fill it with sand and "try before you buy"

Don't however neglect the the basics that also contribute to "shoulders" ie push-ups/extended arm holds & last but not least heavybag work.

On a more pertinant note, your coach is the guy to speak to. Primary guidence should come from him. If he cannot "matchmake" you with a suitable novice opponant - then either bide your time, or look for another trainer (One that puts your wellbeing above all other factors)

To borrow from Bruce Lee - go for "real world power"

Sorry bulldog, Im 6ft exactly and i think my weight is less than it should be for someone as tall as me.

the rules of weight are exactly the same as they are in normal boxing such as welterweight, flyweight, heavyweight etc.

You can use your hands, feet, knees and elbow for striking and theres no striking the knees them selves, your not allowed to kick the knee directly or groin.

Fighting rounds are 3x3 min rounds or 5x2 min rounds in tournaments.

i am currently in the lightweight division.

Well in that case putting on any more mass will put you into light welter, which you may or may not want to do.

I did taekwondo (competed in the nationals) and the guys who were the best were tall, skinny, fast, and strong. From what I've seen of Muay Thai boxers though they're pretty big, but if there's weight classes take advantage of that.

In taek people used to do the craziest **** to drop weight (vomiting, starvation, dehydration, diuretics etc.), and would lose a lot of strength in the process, even collapsing or feeling faint. I'd rather fight a bigger guy but be 100% personally...but imo go for power over size. Some size will come naturally from power training.

That is pretty light for someone 6 ft. tall.  But like Peak said, work on strength and power and the size will come along with it.  That will also allow you to take advantage of fighting in the lighter weight classes.  I'm guessing you will be at least 6 inches taller than most people in your weight class and you would probably have a huge reach advantage.  I bet you would dominate the clinches with the height advantage.

Good luck and please keep us posted on how thing go.  I'm a huge fight fan no matter what it is.  TKD, Thai boxing, MMA I love watching them all.
