A torn ACL and subsequent surgery prevents me from do doing squats. Knee aches like hell.

However, i am able to leg press and deadlift fine.
Can i combine Leg press and stiff Legged Deadlift as a close replacement for Squats ?

I am thinking of starting a HST cycle with

Workout A
Leg Press
Straight Legged Deadlift

Bench
Bent over Row

Workout B
DeadLift
Standing Military Press
Dips
Chin up

Would this be fine ? Or would it be too much to deadlift 3 times a week ?

thanks for any help

yeah, i know its strange.

If i do jump squats or just squat with a dumbell, after a few days the knees start to ache.

But i can do single leg leg press for 3x5 @230 lbs without any aches at all. ( i weight about 132lbs )...

So i really dunno man.....

Could it be a form issue? Have you had someone who knows how to properly instruct the squat watch you to see if you are doing the movement correctly? Are you going 90°, parallel or ATG? I know my knees hurt like hell after squatting until I started going ATG.

I am doing Back Squats.

Regarding form, i believe my form is okay.... doing it the way my physio taught me...

Weight on my heels ( i can lift my toes )...
push my buttocks back... ( like i am trying to sit down )
knees do not go beyond my toes

Hi aljafp, it sounds to me like a balance or proprioceptive problem. I am an exercise physiologist with a health science background with rehab included so have a reasonable idea. Completing the leg press if fine as your legs are held in correct position, without stressing stabilizing (synergist) muscles. Try folding a gym mat into quarters, and balancing with one leg. If stable complete one legged quarter squats. Once stability improves through this exercise, your knee joint will be held in place better by surrounding musculature, causing less stress to the joint, and ligaments etc.

Hope this helps.
