Just how catabolic is cardio provivded it is not excessively long (under 45 mins)? Will it lead to slow twitch fibre development which could impede muscle growth?

if you do HIIT cardio dont do more than 30 mins.
if you do slow steady i wouldnt do more than 45mins ,and on non weights days

If you are doing "slow cardio" or basically endurance training which equates to approximately 60-75% your maximal heart rate, catabolism won´t kick in until you have exhausted your glycogen stores in the liver and muscles. This doesn´t happen until AT LEAST 90 minutes after starting. SImply take about 100g Dextrose every 30 minutes and you´ll be fine.

I think too many on this board are overly obsessed with aerobic exercise induced catabolism being that most are talking about 25 minute cardio sessions. I am doing 3 hour sessions three times a week and I don´t worry about it. 25 minutes is almost a joke unless you are doing Tabata in which case it is too long.

I don´t even think the interval training that many do here is having any catabolic effect.
YOu gotta really go long and hard B4 muscle catabolism is starting.

Interesting. Dr Pierre, is the 90 mins or so before glycogen stores in the liver and muscles are exhausted true for most folks that might workout three times a week or is it only true for folks that have performed a fair amount of endurance training over the years?

I suspect most are worried about slowing down or halting their potential gains and assume that catabolism is going to happen if they do too much cardio. So are you saying that any apparent catabolic effect is, in fact, due to not consuming enough calories to provide the body with the surplus required for growth while on a program of weights and cardio?

Obviously, endurance athletes have made more efficient their energy usage and thus more than likely last longer than a non endurance athlete.

What many may be thinking of as catabolism is either due to

1. caloric intake being insufficient
2. eating the wrong foods
3. genetically limit
4. a lose of water
5. cessation of steroid usage
6. drop in testosterne
7. Etc...............many possibilities

As I stated b4, you´d be hard pressed to get catabolism going with 25 minutes cardio sessions.
