Need a little guidance for first cycle

I've been doing the standard body split workout for as long as I can remember (9+ years). Not the same workout that is

but using the principles of the 3 or 4 way split to create the various programs that I have followed ... So now it's time for something new and I'd like to try out HST.

I've been reading as much as I can, and just when I think I have an idea of where to start, I read something else and get confused. The routine that is laid out on this site http://www.hypertrophy-specific.com/hst_II.html seems to have quite a bit of volume compared to all the others that I have seen posted in the forums. Is this the case? Or does it just seem that way compared to the guys that have are on their 3rd and 4th cycles who are only doing compounds now. I also had a look at this site http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/paul4.htm and it did a great job at summing everything up. However the routine that he recommends for a first timer is quite a bit less (over all sets) then the one recommened here.

How long is your average workout? I'll only be training once a day.

Can anyone provide a little guidance to a first timer who is very anxious to try out HST.

Thanks.

Most guys finish their workouts in under 1 hour when they use the vanila HST program. For your first cycle I am a fan of something simple like:

bench
squats
chins
dips
deadlift
mil press

lift every 48 hours using 15 10 5 rep ranges

Which routine are you talking about, the 1st or 2nd one?  The 1st one isn't HST, it's a 'typical' routine that the 2nd one (HST) is being compared to.

Obviously the 2nd one which is HST.

That page is to show a comparison of workout methods and how they are done during a week.

The HST one, which is the second one shown.

I realize it's a sample HST workout, it just seems like a lot of volume compared to a lot of what is posted on here.

I'll be using this coming week to calculate my 15, 10, and 5 rep maxes. Just want to make sure I'm on the right track before I start. I guess if the workout ends up taking too long, I'll trim it.

If it seems like too much, then follow what Spyke said. I would also throw in Rows and Calf Raises (essential isolation.)

If you don't have an abs routine, then pick a good exercise to add in there for abs. You must train your core to prevent injury and increase strength.
