I am in the process of finding my rep maxes and eagerly anticipating starting hst. My problem is that I am having trouble hitting the exact rep maxes without fatiguing myself too much by doing too many sets and thereby finding my rep max while fatigued. How can I estimate my rep maxes by, for example, using the max reps that I achieved (finding my 15 rep max from what I managed to pump out 20 reps with would be an example)?

Also, am I shooting for absolute failure when trying to determine rep maxes or is there some other point I should be shooting for?

here is a 1 rep max calculator key in 20 reps and find your 15s,10s,5s, i find it quite accurate.

dont go to complete muscle faliure,when you cant get your last rep out with the same form as the one before "thats faliure"
