No Weights, No Gym

I just graduated college and I no longer have my school gym. I also do not have a job which means no money to goto a gym. For the next 4-6 weeks, I want to cut and maintain muscle some how. Calisthenics will be main brunt of work (mostly push-ups), and I will try to move enough things around the house. I really want to do a heavy deadlift though, so any suggestions?

I'd buy some durable buckets and pour some concrete in there. Just grab one in each hand and "deadlift" them. Or just buy a few bags and do a caveman workout lifting them from point A to B. My deadlift max was quite a bit better last summer when I was doing construction for a job moving those bags around all the time... and I was only doing deads like once in a blue moon. I can't imagine all of that would cost anymore than 10 dollars.

Got anything you need to dig up? Shoveling dirt will give them lats and bi's a nice little burn.

Swimming is a decent workout too if you have access to a pool.

Hell, hit up the junk yard and find some heavy metal auto parts that look like you can get a decent grip on them.

Not sure if that helps at all, I guess what I was trying to get at was you'd be suprised how easy it is to find "weights" all around the place, they just look a little different

if your still in state college you can prob. get an "alumni" rate and still hit the same gym (still costs $$$ though). many times the schools "check in" code machine takes months to catch up with with graduation so are still considered a current student until it does.

if your back home........

i wouldnt recommend a cut unless you were lifting wgts and reasonably heavy ones at that. bw exer are ok for the short run if your planning maint but it will do very little to preserve muscle mass over time. now if your seriously over your goal % (say 18+%) then a modest deficit and some type exer. for a short while, say 4-5 weeks probably wouldnt be too detrimental.

bottom line is it takes a lot of heavy lifting and serious eating to put muscle on. i wouldnt run the risk of undermining that effort by dieting but NOT lifting reasonably heavy at the same time. you will prob. lose wgt but a portion could be muscle b/c your not taxing it.

solutions,
many gyms let you join 6 months free. they usually get you later with a 1yr contract etc. etc. but if you something free now........

many gyms have no initiation fee, just $$ per month which shouldnt be too steep for 1 month at a time.

people are always selling/giving away home gym free wgts, bars etc b/c they dont use them anymore. a couple bucks for a bar and some wgt should hold you for a few months. find a place to dip and chin and youll have the wgts for presses, curls maybe even enough for squat and deads. just enough work and wgt to keep the muscles working while you cut down.

go caveman type w/o like gator sugg. it involves a lot more thinking(more then going to the gym/garage and just lifting like youve doen a thousand times before) to come up with exer., wgts, places etc. but if that type of training interests you it would be great break from the gym and almost limitless in options.

good luck

Along with what blue said about gyms, if you don't find one that is 6 months free, I'd say a lot of gyms offer a 1-week trial. I don't know how rural where you live is, but if you have multiple gyms I'd try going from gym to gym getting the trials. Simply tell them you just moved back from college and are looking to find a gym to get a membership at and want to try it out for a week.

Well, I am back in Pittsburgh for good, but funny thing about their systems is that they were automatically updated that I was graduating before the actual ceremony took place. I went to the gym a couple weeks ago and my card wasn't accepted. Luckily the guy let me go and said I had one more day that I could lift.

That's a good idea as I know about five or so gyms right off the top of my head. I could possibly goto one a week, and do calisthenics and "caveman" lifting throughout the week. Fit that with some running and a correct diet and I could pull this off. Thanks for the ideas.

i think as long as you get 1-2 decently heavy days in per week you should be in good shape. some caveman/bw type of work 1-2 days a week for cardio/fitness/depletion/fun/whatever and then at least 1 (or 2) heavy days of 5rm type work (those free gym membership days) should hold you nicely for the time you have planned. just something heavy each week to keep the muscle you worked do hard to get.

good luck

Jailhouse rows(fat man rows)
          chin ups
donkey calf raises (using human loads)
          Push ups (feet on wall)
Push ups ( small children/females gradually building to fat friends/aquantainces on back)
Push car in nuetral up and down street ( friend steers)
Cell block deads (which I believe I may have invented) helper lies in blanket , lifter grabs two corners of blanket in each hand and deads- build up to fatter friends or encourage helper to try to put on weight so load progresses.
Piggy back squats

Ha, that idea sounds pretty bad-a$$ actually. I wonder how many pounds a "standard" 4-door car translates into when you push it.

A modified Tbar row can be done by straddling a trailer hitch that holds a boat or heavy load (gloves reccomended), Or you can just pull the thing down the driveway or street.

Dips between two pickup beds, the corner rail of a deck or two stools. Overhead press an extension ladder (heck, I do that all the time!) Also use that for french presses. Floor press the end of a sofa or stand and curl it. One-hand pushups. One-leg squats on a box. Sissy squats using your belt and a doorknob. All kinds of things to do at a playground on the swings, monkey bars, etc.

Do you have a car ? Time to stop driving and start pushing

You could meet those fat friends that way.
(It's just a bad joke. Don't tell the hef... the soccer moms.)
Bo Jackson was once quoted as saying that he never lifted weights. You might look up whatever he was doing. But I'd bet that he was lifting trailer axles or something similar--semantics. Bo knows something. Maybe.
