Please tell me about "light aerobic exercise" on in between days - important? Why?

How important is the light aerobic exercise on 'in between' days ?
Do we really need it? And of so why?

Also just how hard should one be pushing oneself doing this aerobic stuff?
e.g. How out of breath / What heart rate?
And for how long? (Would 20 mins be enough?)

What sort of exercise is good/bad?
e.g. walking?
e.g. soccer?
e.g. dancing?

What happens if you take too little exercise?
What happens if you take too much exercise?
Or the wrong type of exercise?

Please note that I am keen not to go to the gymn on "in between" days unless I absolutely have to!
