On one of the training sites I frequent, someone once posted a link to an article that had pictures of men at various percentages of bodyweight, with descriptions (ie, at such-and-such percentage the abs start to become visible).

It's a stupid request, and I'm sorry to bother you, but I've spent hours searching and can't find the damn link. There's just too much competing noise. Does anyone here know where it is?

Thanks, QuantumPositron. I found that one, too, and it's pretty good, but not exactly the one I was looking for. Mine had larger photos, was of different men, and went into definitions of "cut" vs. "shredded," etc. It even went into the unhealthy levels of BF, to show what that looked like.

I think it may have been a forum post, which may be why Google isn't being very helpful.

The one you found is useful, but the pictures are annoyingly small and so widely varied in lighting, body oil etc that it's difficult to really pick out the truth.

He kindof lies. Unless he's dead. And even ignoring that, I've seen guys in far better condition(better vascularity, separation and so on) on stage(granted, a few of them), who had caliper readings that put them into the 5 something range, so I wouldn't put that much stock in Venuto's example.

As a funny anecdote, I remember Beercardi stating, whilst pimping one or another of his crap diets, that he was at about 2,8% BF. That was funny stuff. And I think Flex Wheeler was tested to be 0% around the 93 Arnold(?when he was at the top of his game, I think this was the contest, I could be wrong though)-which simply goes on to show that BF% numbers pretty much suck ass

The link that QP provided is fairly accurate, but the 14-16% I would put him as 12%, and his 16-18% / 20% pictures would be switched IMO. Other than that, it's a great scale, and a good model of success!

Thanks, Chance! This is the one I was thinking of.

In the book "SLICED" (by Bill Reynolds & Negrita Jayde), the states of muscularity are objectified as follows (I'll summarize each):

1. Full house = Over or near 20% bodyfat with no visible muscle definition and only a hint of separation between major muscle groups if those groups are very large. Basically a person in this state could be confused for a football linebacker. If you're higher than this bodyfat percentage, you'd be considered overweight/obese.

Here are some examples of the Full House state:

Tankus: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...5&d=1064029833

CrazyMike: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...2&d=1071515731

2. Hard = Some muscle separation appears between delts and upper arm. Abs are still not visible. Approximately 15% bodyfat.

Here's a picture of Railz in the Hard state:

3. Cut = More muscle separation appears particularly in the chest and back, outline of the abs begins to appear slightly. Approximate bodyfat level = 12%

Here's are 2 examples of Abdominator in the Cut state:

http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...2&d=1059941438
http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...8&d=1059942187

4. Defined = Muscle separations get deeper in the arms, chest, legs and back, and abs appear when flexed. Approx. bodyfat level = 10%

Here's an example of Abdominator in the Defined state:

http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...1&d=1068554724

5. Ripped = Abs are clearly visible all the time, vascularity in arms is prominent, chest and back separation is obvious, and face is starting to appear more angular. Condition can be held indefinitely. Approximate bodyfat level = 7-9%

Here are some examples of the Ripped state:

Railz: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...8&d=1052741270

Abdominator: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...5&d=1067793911

6. Shredded = Striations appear in large muscle groups when they are flexed. You look small in clothes, but look fantastic when you're not. Vascularity appears in lower abdomen and in the legs. Condition can be held for several days with careful dieting. Competitive bodybuilders often aim for this state for competition day. Approximate bodyfat level = 5-7%

Here are some example of the Shredded state:

ShaneG85: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...9&d=1063572548

Freaker: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...7&d=1027498129

Abdominator: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...4&d=1069531013

7. Sliced = Muscles and tendons begin to appear in the face when chewing, striations appear everywhere and vascularity appears everywhere. Bodyfat levels are close to 3% and subcutaneous water levels are near 0. Condition can only be held for a few hours at a time. Not a healthy condition to stay in due to lower water level.

Here's an example of someone in the Sliced state:

Anywho, perhaps you can use this guide to determine how far you're progressing. If/when you decide to cut, make sure you give yourself 12-16 weeks to do it. It won't happen overnight, but the results can be striking when you get into the final 2-3 weeks.

Hope this helps.

The link that Scientific Muscle posted is interesting, too. Obviously it's all to be taken with a grain of salt, but at least it provides a basis of comparison.

The guy has a 6-pack at 12%? Either some of the info is wrong on the HST boards or this guide isn't accurate, as I thought you can't see all 6 abs until about 9-10%...

I can see 4 abs right now and I thought I was at 10-11%, but now I am not sure...

It's all relative, and ab-visibility is not the single measuring stick available. You could for example hold little ab fat, and have a(very) floppy butt-what BF% does that give? And, what does BF% matter if you look good/bad nekkid?

I think that it was Duchaine in Bodyopus who said that basically, you'll end-up measuring skin-folds for gauging diet progress, without giving a damn about BF% determination based on those skinfolds as it gets fairly screwy/is a fairly worthless number. I tend to agree with him.

Oh, and it's interesting seeing that the dude with the differing BF% shots also got a tan and some posing oil on him due to his fat-loss. This is quite magical really.
