Squats and Getting Back

I've been away for a while and have been taking jiu jitsu classes. I lost focus on my strength training and ended up losing a lot of strength, size and weight.

I decided to start a new cycle of HST and can not believe how much strength I have lost. My squats are really bad.

I'm posting because when I squat below parallel my right knee makes a clicking sound. It is not painful, but everytime I bend the knees past parallel I get this popping or clicking. Any idea what that could be? Do you think I should ignore it or go to the doc and get it looked at?

Crackly knees are pretty common amongst lifters. The consensus seems to be that it is usually harmless. You'll probably be fine but make sure you keep an eye on it, especially as you go heavier with the squats. Oh and be sure that you haven't lost your form at all. Usually, after some time off, I need to think about some of the more complex movements. If your knees are buckling inward at all when you rise up out of the hole, it could eventually, possibly cause some problems.

Good luck with your come back.

A couple of days ago I posted about my recent encounters with squats: http://www.hypertrophy-specific.info/cgi-bin....;st=520

I'm 55 years old and am squatting lower than I ever thought I could (with the ego busting, but necessary decrease in weight). I just did a free squat after reading your post and I have all kinds of snap, crackle, and pops as I raise up out of the 'hole', but no pain at all. I wish I could say the same for my right shoulder.

Interestingly, I was having some knee pain a few months ago and thought that leg curls might have been the cause. I stopped doing them and haven't had any knee problems since.

Also, I agree with Tot that buckling the knees inward will cause problems. I'm somewhat flat footed and have to be careful of that.

I am 22, and I have been having cracks in my knees since I was a teenager, so yes it is very common. Buckling of the knees is a whole different story though.

My knees have always sounded like a knife cutting a cabbage in half. An orthopedic surgeon at my church told me it's just cartilage; not to worry about it if there's no pain.

I have the same thing in both knees. It started when I was about 23. I went to a family practicioner. He could make his knees creak too. He tested me for arthritis and knee injuries using some kind of joint manipulations. He said I was fine. I wanted to make sure so I asked for something more extensive. He did a blood test for arthritic blood indicators. It came back negative. My knees still crack when I go up and down stairs or just bend them. One of my grandfathers always had popping joints. For now it is more of a sound effect than anything and not a very cool one. I wish it was something Terminatoresque.

"What is that wirring sound?"

"That what?"

"That wirring and thumping noise when you walk. It sounds like Robocop is walking by."

"Oh yeah, that. That's just my quads."

"!?"

I don't seem to have that problem yet. I am almost 20 though. Does that mean it will eventually happen to me considering males on average don't stop growing until 25 or so? I'm just curious.

I don't have any problem with my knees and I'm 42: no pops, clicks, cracking or cabbage cutting noises that I am aware of. Everything else about me is starting to creak but my knees seem to be holding out just fine so I am grateful for that.

No use worrying about stuff that isn't there. BB'ing will give you enough to consider as the years go by on it's own!
