Stiff Legged Deadlifts?

This is my first post here. I'm on my first HST cycle. Tomorrow is session 6 of the 15's. I got back into weight training about 4 months ago after a several year lay off. So far so good. I have a question about Stiff Legged Deadlifts and Good Mornings - do you lock your knees or keep them slightly bent? I remember reading many years ago to NOT lock the knees, but the other day I read an explanation of the SLDL on one of the numerous BB websites and it said to lock your knees. I can't find any discussion of pros and cons of this. Anybody here have an opinion on this?

Thanks
Phil

Although technically a Stiff Legged Deadlift means just that, I would not completely lock my knees. I would not recommend that you lock your knees.

Same applies to Good Mornings.

I can handle a heavier load more comfortably if I don't lock my knees. When I lock them I feel a lot more strain on my tendon insertions passing behind my knees.

I have seen some folks bend their knees a lot when attempting to do SLDLs, in which case I would suggest that they might as well learn to do regular deadlifts properly.

Look at it this way: there's a difference between keeping your legs straight and locking them out, just like during the bench ress you can extend your arms fully without locking out your elbows. It's a fine line but it is there.

Sounds like a Romanian Deadlift to me with the bent knees.

There is an important difference:

Yeah, it's all about your butt!

Thanks for the input. I watched the videos. SLDL- legs straight, but with a slight break in the knees. I always thought a Romanian deadlift was just another name for a SLDL, but there is obviously a difference. It looks to me that the knees are bent more and the butt is sticking out more. Is that correct?

Thank you for bringing that up. I'm the first to admit I'm a dummy when it comes to this sort of thing.

What is the difference between the SLDL and the Romanian...?

He seemed to have a bit more arch in his back for the Romanian deadlift. Is that it?

I found this excellent description that clearly explains the difference: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0KGB/is_3_4/ai_n6006089
