The specificity of tabata

Right, my friend is training to break into the Scottish Rugby team. I know that tabata increased the V02 max more than conventional training. Does that mean tabata would be better for an athlete training for a 80 minute rugby game? Should he be doing tabata to compliment his regular aerobic training or exclusively?

It should be part of Rugby training to do HIIT, ceratinly Tabata has proven to increase VO2max, then I'd seriously consider either adding to current regime, or if after trying it he finds it better than the actual conventional HIIT, to substitute.

Nowadays, training smart is what keeps us ahead of the pack, more so then in the rugby field.

he should be doing enough hiit training with his rugby..but if he can do some tabatta after then it cant do any harm..just make sure his diet is sound.
