'Alkaloids' means that the substance is of plant origin. Practically, what you get is a mixture of substances among which some of them will probably exhibit some pharmacological action. If you want to be sure that the plant extract is effective, you should buy only 'standardized' extracts. 'Standardized' basically means that a certain concetration of an effective substance is guaranteed. Otherwise, you may get more or (usually) less active product, depending on the plant variation, harvesting time, etc.
