Ephedra HCL question?

Has anyone tried ephedra HCL without caffeine? I was thinking about trying ephedra by itself to counter act the lethargy side effects of taking prohormones and I heard that caffeine can make the body secrete insulin?

Dear ttboyy2k,

The HST FAQ on supplements gives information on the EC stack.

www.drumlib.com has more detailed information should you desire further reading.

To answer your questions: Ephedra refers to the plant... its extracts are ephedrine alkaloids and if synthetically produced, should be called ephedrine (ephedrine HCL or sulphate, depending on its form) so if the product says ephedra HCL rather than ephedrine HCL, something is wrong.

Ephedrine HCL (E), when taken alone, has a very short half-life (about 20 minutes from memory) and it works as an indirect stimulant for cathecholamine release. The caffeine © prevents breakdown of these cathecholamines, resulting in a prolonged stimulant effect. Taking E without C would result in a relatively small cathecholamine release owing to breakdown of the said cathecholamines, too small to be of any thermogenic significance.

C itself does not result in insulin release but cathecholamines can wreak havoc with blood sugar levels since they do induce glycogenolysis (release of glycogen) and also, gluconeogenesis. It is unlikely that such increase in blood glucose via these means will result in secretion of insulin. The FAQ does mention that C causes temporal insulin resistance but given the vast successful usage of the EC combo this really is not a problem. Furthermore, the studies (neatly presented at drumlib's site) indicate that long-term use of the EC combo resulted in a greater thermogenic effect. This is perhaps, an indication that fat-loss was in no way hindered by whatever effect EC might have had on insulin secretion.

You can take E on its own for its nasal decongestive effects and also as a pre-workout boost but you will not be milking the maximum stimulatory benefits if not synergistically combined with C.

In short, you can safely take EC but do have your blood-pressure checked prior to taking EC. Prohormones are known to increase blood-pressure, and EC will temporarily increase blood-pressure too. To what extent your BP will increase depends on your current BP now and your degree of adrenal defect. If your BP is already high on the prohormones, it might not be a good idea to take anything stimulatory in nature.

Godspeed, and happy HSTing :)
