Weight gain and general nutrition

I am new to lifting. I have heard protein is important. How much should I be taking? Do I take it just before and just after each session or all the time?
What type of protein? I have heard 100 % Whey among others. I have seen where some of this stuff gets expensive. How much should I be allocating say per month for protein?

I am trying to add mass and weight. At 6'5" and 178 lbs some weight would be good.

I have found a calculator online to show me how many calories I need to increase to to put on weight. Any other suggestions?

I also am looking for general guidelines as to what types of foods I should now be eating since I am lifting. Is there a web site that has this info?
Someone please advise I need the assistance.
