free weights vs machines on compounds

I only use machines if the help relieve issues from injuries. For example, any barbell flat or incline bench pressing will end up giving my left shoulder fits after a couple of months, but I can use the Hammar Strength Iso-Lateral Incline Chest Press machine (plate loaded) with almost no...

Maybe Lol was in fact joking and I didn't catch it. But "Dynamic Muscle Building" was a posthumously published book written by Steve Reeves .

As I get older (now 45) it is less and less viable for me to lift heavy 5 RM loads regularly. Lord knows I need to get stronger, however, my bad shoulder is giving me lots of fits again lately due to the heavier 5 RM loads. So I'm seriously considering not lifting anything heavier than my 8-10...

Which book? "Dynamic Muscle Building" (2003) or "Building the Classic Physique: The Natural Way" (1995)? I'm always looking to add to my library. Reading reviews on Amazon it sounds like they both have some of the same information.

    Rihad's log

This is why you should only weigh yourself once per week on the same day and at the same time each week (i.e. every Saturday morning at 8:00 am when you wake up right after you take a leak). If your workout and feeding schedule stays the same week in and week out then that one weekly weigh-in...

    1 five-rep max vs. 5 one-rep maxes

Yeah, I'm in Michigan too (northern LP). We have two Crossfit gyms where I'm at. Well, actually only one is a "Crossfit" gym, but the other one does the same crap but doesn't use the name because they don't want to pay $$ to do so. Anyhow the official Crossfit gym is $100/month for three days...

Did you get all that info from a soy protein website?

Home Gym - What Brand is best?

You need to be careful with smith machines especially when squatting. Your body doesn't naturally move anything in a direct line as they move.

    RM in second set

As the load increases your rest times will need to increase as well. When you get to your 5RM and beyond you may find you need to rest for 3+ min. between sets. There is nothing wrong with that. Just don't waste a bunch of time resting longer than what is really necessary.

    Zig zag : advise please

Yes. The overall load progression over the entire 8 week cycle is what is important.

    Zig zag : advise please

Like Totentanz said, zig zag doesn't matter. Think of those easier workouts as a deload of sorts that will let you push harder when the weights get heavy again.

One HST concept I don't fully understand...

Unfortunately since you are talking about the human body and how it responds to weight training, it's not just simple math. There is a lot more involved that we just don't fully understand. The bottom line is that progressive load as suggested on the HST website works and you don't need to make...
