Carnitine

Seems like carnitine is making a comeback. I remember in the late 80s and early 90s it was hyped, but is sort of disappeared. Now I'm reading more and more about it again. Seems like research has been continuing all along, but supplement companies moved on to promoting other stuff.

Anyway, here are some articles I thought I'd throw out for discussion. I'll just put the links here.

Here are a couple of experiments involving feeding caffeine, carnitine and choline to rats.

Seems like high-doses. Also can't figure out what the ratio of the three substances was.

Here's a more recent experiment using caffeine and carnitine on humans.

Seems to demonstrate a synergy between the two substances.

Here are a couple showing no effect for carnitine alone.

The first one is a little iffy -- a marathon is a pretty extreme physical challenge. It's pretty demanding to expect 4g of carnitine to have any impact.

Anyone out there using carnitine?

on a AAS board that I used to read at (im all natural, but wanted to learn) someone was talking about using l-carnitine for local fat loss (spot reduction) and said that it is basically a very strong lipid mobilizer, so when done properly and timed properly with cardio, it was supposedly effective... something about this being done in mexico quite a bit... its hard to find info on this stuff because most of the purchasable products are made for veterinary use (legal, but not very safe IMO).

Interesting. I think a few people on this board have been using topical fat burning products -- LipoDerm and something called Yohimburn. I think Steve McDermott's been using something with good results.

Wonder if any of these contain carnitine (or whether you could add it)?

LipoDerm and Yohimburn are topical yohimbine products which are designed to release/mobilize estrogenic (stubborn) fat such as chest, ab, and love handle fat that just won't let go during a cutting period. They very often cause local water retension and bloating which makes the products seem like they aren't working, however once the water resides (up to 2 weeks later) the results (if you ate and/or did cardio right) should be more apparent. BTW- AvantLabs, is working on LipoDerm Ultra which will contain some added stuff for local fat loss and a local diuretic to cut down on the annoying water retension :).

Neither contain l-carnitine, and from what I understand, l-carnitine is injected into the site for fat mobilization, however I forgot the specifics in regards to dangers and proper application... I do remember him saying to keep the injections at least one inch away from the nipple and to use insulin pins for the injections.... DO NOT go by what I'm saying, this is just me trying to half remember what I read.. research research research this crap over and over before trying it.... IMO its a waste of time unless you are a pro in competition or something like that.

Actually, what is more interesting seems to be acetyl l-carnitine, which Coyote mentioned (ALCAR). It is expensive, unforunately.

Acetyle L-carnitine seems to be somehow affecting nervous system, similar to r-ala ... Of course, the combination (acetyle l-carnitine and r-ala) has been shown to have temporary "anti-aging" effect (improved memory, more energy, etc -- ... but of course, the experiments were done on rats).
