Challenging Protein recommendations

I recently read some hype for a book claiming that widely accepted 1-1.5 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight protein protocol is a scam perpetuated by the magazines, who own the supplement companies, who sel protein.

Has anyone read any conclusive studies to support this protein recommendation? It seems to me like it's always been "common knowledge" amongst bodybuilders, but I don't know if I've seen any real research.

The author of the thing I read pointed to the large, jacked physiques of prison inmates who clearly do not get anywhere near that much protein in their diets.

Did the author mention anything at all about the prevelance of steroids in prison? They are very easy to get your hands on when locked up.

But yeah, you might not need as much protein as people think. I recall Bryan saying in the past that with higher quality protein, you need less, while with lower quality protein, you would need more. However, I'd prefer to stay safe and get at least 1 gram per lb like usual, regardless of protein source.

Some of my ex-inmate employees told me that one of the things in prison that help you build is rest. All ya do is sleep and work out; no burning of cals otherwise for the most part. That wouldn't explain the guys on the work gangs, I know.

I have heard that there is a study that says the body can only absorb 7-10 grams of protein per hour, is there any truth to that?

No. It`s unclear wheter or not current protein recommendations are high, low or spot on, simply due to the fact that an argument(and a valid one) can be construed for both sides, based on current research. That being said, protein is one of the few things that can't really hurt you if you get a tad bit more into the system...and I`d rather have more than I need than less than I need, IMHO.

Morgoth brings up the critical point to consumption of protein. Also, the bonus about protein is that it is the most thermogenic of all the macronutrients.

Lbs or kgs?

I know a guy who works as a corrections officer in a prison, and he told me that the number one reason guards got into trouble where he works was smuggling in steroids and protein powder. That contributed to the decision of the state government's decision to ban all free weights, but machine weights are still allowed. I think that all weights have been banned in prisons in Arizona.

No, it's 0.67 grams.

Sheesh...
