Cutting on "high" calories

Here is an excerpt from Restless' recent post in the "results" thread:

Quote[/b] ]Diet was around 2800 KCals, never lower than 2600 and to the end as high as 3200, with one or two additional HIIT sessions per week.

He also mentioned that he is now 79kg, which is 173lb, having dropped 20 lbs.

My question: how is this accomplished on what seems to be a "high" calorie intake level, which in his case is 15x BW?

Now, I don't know how old Restless is, how he spends his day & how active he is, but it doesn't seem to me that 3 weight sessions + a couple HIIT sessions per week can be enough to significantly lose weight. Can they, at that calorie level?

Is it possibly faster metabolism to process that 2800 cals, more muscle mass in that 173lbs to aid fat-burning, or a higher overall starting BF% that would allow quick fat loss.... or what??

I hope someone (Restless?) will shed some light on how someone of that bodyweight can successfully cut on 2800 cals - unless they are hyper-active I just don't see how!

Thanks for any insights.

Restless will chime in, I just wanted to note that this seems to be a logical level of calories for cutting if someone trains daily.

Besides, there is sooooo much variety among the caloric requirements of various people... My brother for example, is 65kg and anything below 2600-2700 kcal is cutting level for him (with zero activity level). His bodyfat has never been above 5%. It's very vexing to watch him eat everything in sight without putting on a single kg.

I was losing a little weight (not trying to mind!) eating around those calories (as a conservative estimate) doing HST 3 x a week and not much else.

I've now dropped to around 2200 calories and added cardio so I expect to lose weight fairly easily - I would have thought 2800 was very high if aiming to lose weight but just demonstrating that it can be done!

Last cycle, I was trying to gain & was eating "loose" 2500 cals and felt like all I got was fat. With SD and some current cutting cycle results, I've lost all my weight gain from that. Now trying to get leaner before bulking again.

Bet its not so vexing if you're both trying to bulk!

What were those calories consisting of?

I'm assuming if you were adhering to HST principles and getting your gram of protein per lb of bodyweight (With plenty of carbs) then some of your gain must have been muscle. I think 2500 is very low mind for bulking.

You say you 'felt' like all you got was fat - were you measuring fat levels? and your bodyparts' size? Because often people hate seeing fat put on when bulking and also muscles become less defined etc so they may be bigger but look smaller in a way. I have the opposite problem in that when cutting and losing weight I'm paranoid its all muscle I'm losing and have to fight the urge to start bulking immediately!

People are so individual in the metabolism department that what works for one most likely will not work for another. Restless has a mutant metabolism ;) If I recall, he eats around 5000 cals/day while bulking. If I did that, I would end up looking like a sumo wrestler. As he stated, he is eating an average of 3000 cal/day and losing fat. I would be hypercaloric at that level.

Right now, at a BW of 191lbs, I eat around 1900 calories on rest days and 2500 on training days and still have trouble losing fat. I do use refeeds of around 4000 calories usually on Saturdays as well as a much smaller refeed (2700-2800) on Wednesday nights. I have tried to increase the calories, but i just bring fat loss to a screeching halt. Also, suring SD, I eat at or above maintenance for the whole 2 weeks in an effort to a) retain the gains from the cycle and b) reset my metabolism. I have just not been blessed with a good metabolism where fat losss is concerned. I train pretty much the same amount that he does too.

At this point, I've had to employ other measures to increase the fat loss ie, nicotine gum, Lipoderm-Y and Absolved while continuing my E/C. I'm getting down there, but it's a slow process. On the upside, I have lost very little if any muscle.

Lyle has a few posts over at Avant's forum that dicuss the differences in people where fat loss is concerned. If I find them, I'll post them.
