Fasting for more than 24h

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to know if someone here has tried to fast ala Intermittent fasting for more than 24hours and what results did they get?

I tried the 16h/8h and 24h/24h, the latter being better for loosing fat but quite difficult to sustain long term but what if i fasted more that 24h?

Will I lose fat even more rapidly?

I fasted for 10 days a few months back. But I did drink Xtend (BCAA drink) throughout the day and took Purple Wraath (EAA's) before and after my lifting sessions.

I lost 16lbs, and even though I may have lost a little muscle, it wasn't apparent and my arm measurements were the same.

There is a study looking at anabolic and catabolic gene expression from a 40hour fast, and showed no significant change in genes involved in muscle catabolism.

But regardless, there will be some amino acid breakdown during a 24+ hour fast, but if you eat a high protein diet and lift as well during feeding periods, it will likely not be noticeable. And yes, fasting will results in faster fat loss than anything else outside of liposuction.

Ok thanks that's what I imagined because for me after 20hours of fast the fat begins really to go away fast but not before....now imagine I fast for 36h for how long do I have to eat ? 12 hours and more? I think it's reasonable....
 
Well, any diet with a decent calorie deficit will cause fat loss. What you are probably noticing is either a decrease in food in the gut which can make you look leaner, or a drop in bloating from possible food sensitivities. I notice the same thing when I go a long period of time without food, especially a much less puffy look in my face. But fat will be lost on a regular frequent meal schedule if you stick with it.

If you wanted to try a 36 hour fast, then a 12 hour feeding window, or eating every other day, makes sense. Dan Moore posted a study on a diet where subjects ate every other day and by the likely inaccurate measures used to measure muscle maintenance, muscle seemed to be well maintained.

It would be tough to stick with and not necessary, but if you wanted to try it i'd shoot for 1.5g protein per lb LBM on eating days, DEFINITELY lift early in the day on eating days, so that would be every other day. Have your preworkout Amino's from whey or EAA's, lift, then eat for the rest of the day.

To accelerate fat loss to an even greater degree, you can do some LOW intensity cardio on fasting days.
 
Aside from what Pete said, when doing a prolonged fast make sure you supplement with essential fatty acids (fish oil capsules or 1 tsp flax seed oil) and multivitamines. Perhaps some green tea (contains bioflav-something - dont remember the spelling - it's good for you, anyway).

Dan Moore did some 48 hour fasts last year, if I remember correctly.
 
And check out Lyle McDonald's The Rapid Fat Loss Handbook for more info on a modified protein sparing modified fast (PSMF). It is the rulebook.

Edit: Lyle says that 1-1,5 grams of protein per kg LBM, or 0,5-0,7 grams per lbs LBM, will prevent loss of body protein. This is from a great deal of experimentation.
 
I thought it was less than the usual 1/1 or 1-1/2 to 1 ratio, but I still lost mass on the 16/8 IF. Arms went down about 3/4&quot; for some reason, even though I lifted heavy and kept volume low. I can't win? I like the idea of using BCAA's or even a complete protein spectrum during the fasting. Might lose a bit less, but keep the beef?

Sure there is but a large percentage is recycled in PS. Glycerol and lactacte also contribute to gluconeogenesis, lactate the higher percentage and can compromise as high as 1/3 initial HGP. Glycerol can compromise nearly 20% or so.

I remember you mentioning that, but was this in lean subjects. My concern with fasting is the same concern with the anti-catabolic nature of ketosis. It is in heavy individuals, but become less protein sparing as you get leaner from less available fat stores.

Dan, do you think it would be a waste to supplement during a fast or IF diet in a lean individual, say below 10% bodyfat???

Supplements such as drinking a cocktail throughout the day of 15g glucose, 10g leucine, some electrolytes, vit. C, perhaps some bicarbonate, and glutamine for gluconeogenic precursors and gut health.
