grapefruit magic:prove it

So the magic naringin may not be so magic after all (magic potion that some grapefruit gurus say causes the rapid weight loss when consuming grapefruit)

Any response from Grapefruit Gurus?

NARINGIN DOES NOT ALTER CAFFEINE PHARMACOKINETICS, ENERGY EXPENDITURE, OR CARDIOVASCULAR HAEMODYNAMICS IN HUMANS FOLLOWING CAFFEINE CONSUMPTION

Tasha LP Ballard**South Dakota Health Promotion and Research Program, Applied Physiology Laboratory, , Fathi T Chemistry and Biochemistry, South Dakota State University, USA

1.
Naringin, a grapefruit constituent interacts with many medications including caffeine, a popular weight loss supplement. The purpose of the current study was to identify changes in caffeine pharmacokinetics, resting energy expenditure (REE), oxygen consumption (VO2) and respiratory exchange ratio (RER) after an acute dosage of caffeine and naringin.
2.
Using a double-blinded, counterbalanced design, REE, VO2, and RER were measured before and systematically for 8 h after a single dosage of caffeine (CAF, 200 mg) with and without naringin (100 mg (CN100) or 200 mg (CN200)) in 10 apparently healthy individuals. A standardized meal was provided following 240-minute measurements (400 kcals; 35 g carbohydrate; 27 g protein; 7 g fat).
3.
Caffeine, CN100, CN200 did not alter VO2 or VO2 area under the curve (137 301 ± 8318, 139 729 ± 9300, 134 297 ± 8318, mL/480 min). Resting energy expenditure (k/cals) was 10.0 ± 1.4% higher with CAF versus CN200 (6.0 ± 1.4%) and CN100 (6 ± 1.5%) at 240 min (P = 0.07) which was then negated following a standardized meal. Percent change in RER from pre to 240 min and pre to 480 min was not different between the CAF, CN100, or CN200 (–0.2 ± 1.7%, 1.7 ± 1.7%, –2.8 ± 1.9%).
4.
Although caffeine alone suggests a trend of increased REE, the results of the present study indicate that concurrent consumption of caffeine with naringin in acute dosages does not affect RER, VO2, and prevents the increase of REE in adult humans. The results suggest that the interaction of grapefruit juice and caffeine may be due to constituents of grapefruit juice other than naringin or in addition to naringin.

In all honesty various fruits provide you with unique nutritional profiles. Keep in mind other citrus fruits also contain naringin although degrees vary. From the study above Naringin doesn’t seem to matter any way. Also consider that pink and white grapefruits are significantly different in terms of cals as well as other nutrients.

I have seen all types of fruit consumption by bbers getting ready for shows. Assuming cals are same no difference in physique.

How about authorities say you should not consume fruits? Fruits generally contain about 6-7 gms fiber fructose per serving. Studies generally show 60-100g fructose to jack up de novo lipogenesis (conversion to fat in liver). That takes a bunch of fruit. Around workout time some people report gi distress when consuming fruits while others do just fine. Not eat any fruit period is an all together different subject matter. Aragon does an excellent job in Girth Control book explaining this.

In conclusion, grapefruit nutritious fruit just as other fruits. It might offer some further benefits concerning satiation and glucose control, and IR. As far as physique goes eat various fruits similar cal contents Minimal to Zero difference Period.

This is what Alan Aragon had to say about grapefruit and it’s supposed magical properties
“As far as grapefruit being a "magic" fruit for dieters, recent
research done last year by Fujioka's team can be interpreted to
indicate that possibility. But the big problem is, we're talking about
3.3 lbs more weight loss than placebo - over a 12 week period.
Frankly, you can get that kind of weight loss by scratching your ass
and singing in the shower. Instead of using apple juice as a placebo,
I'd like to see them compare the effect of a range of whole fruits
with grapefruit. Then you'll see the differences diminish into less
significance than they already do.

As Jamie mentioned, naringin in grapefruit inhibits the elevation in
resting energy expenditure caused by caffeine. So for the coffee
drinkers out there, buying into the magic fruit concept could actually
be negating the objective of ramping up thermogenesis via caffeine.

If the lunacy over grapefruit makes people consume fruit when they
hadn't before (or make them consume more fruit), then great, that's a
positive. But I think folks need to be aware that grapefruit is one of
the most medication-interactive foods out there, and should really do
their investigative dilligence if they're on any meds”.

Hey, I like coffee and fresh grapefruit juice with breakfast, when I can be bothered to make it. Not sure of any health benefits; it tastes nice, though ;)

OK, fair point. I've been eating so much for 6 months or so, though, it's been a long time since I drank coffee or juice without food

It stands to reason that fruit if consumed as a whole instead of as juice will end up being highly benefitial for weight or girth loss, and whilst grapefruit may have lipolytic properties most likely other fruits will to specially the citruis type due to amongst others the Naringin.

As you rightly said there is nothing magic in it or about it.

Fruit's fibre was intended to be consumed together with the juice in other words the whole fruit so as to get maximum benefit for our bodily functions. T

he whole problem is we don't eat enough of it!

Dan Moore www.hypertrophy-research.com added the following

"Did you know that a grapefruit only contains about 400-1800 PPM of Naringin, that’s only about 4 micromole/l, it would take a shipload of juice or grapefruit to get any substantial amounts that represents what was given in any study. One study I saw used .96 gm, that would be like 16 liters of grapefruit, I mean I love grapefruit but come on".
