I'm doing HST now, and I plan on doing 3 cycles of pure HST (halfway through 2nd now). After that, I plan on using Westside training, to really add a lot of strength. I haven't given it a ton of thought yet, but would it be possible to merge HST and Westside together? My initial reaction is no, because with the changing days (maximum effort and dynamic), the weights would be zig zagging a lot. And plus, you'd be training to failure on ME days, which would totally go against HST. Is there any possible way to stay away from failure, but still produce Westside-like strength gains, while using principles from both programs?
2. is there a way to merge strength training and hypertrophy? sure. is there a way to put those two particular programs together? i dont think so b/c they are very specified programs designed to produce very specific different results.

You mean apart from doing one cycle of each ?

Westside contains all of the HST principals anyway :)
5. in a roundabout way, i guess it does. never thought of it that way, though.
