I want to lose fat AND gain muscle - help!

I figure I have an excess 10 lbs of fat (around my gut). I'm ok everywhere else.

I've been using HST principles for about a month now and am seeing great results in terms of muscle mass, especially in the chest and arms.

Now, my question is: Is it impossible to gain muscle AND lose fat at the same time? It makes sense for that to be so, since they are polar opposites in terms of principles of diet - for example, eat an extra 500 calories a day (mostly protein) to gain muscle, OR cut 500 calories a day to lose fat. Am I correct in my very basic understanding?

So, if I want to gain muscle but also lose fat, should I continue HST for a while, THEN try to lose fat afterwards by cutting calories, OR should I stop HST now, try to lose fat by cutting calories and doing cardio and then when I've lost all the fat resume HST?

Sorry if my post is confusing...I would appreciate any advice.

To gain muscle: HST + hypercaloric diet. (eat more)

To preserve muscle while losing fat: HST + hypocaloric diet. (eat less)

Make sure to eat lots of protein, especially when cutting.

No, its not a good idea to try to gain muscle and lose fat at the same time.

If in your first 1/2 year of workouts you can eat at maintenance and possibly do both. Never again afterward though. It's actually more "recomposition" in a word, but technically is many things happening at once. I believe that basically you are losing fat due to increased activity burning calories, and gaining muscle because of the extreme mechanisms of new stress.
After a while, there is no such thing as "new stress", only increased amounts of it, henceforth a lesser gain (adaption/repair) rate.
