Is using heavy weights & low reps... bad for joints (esp leg press/knees)

Hi

I just pushed about 120 Kg on the leg press machine. (10 reps x2). I am in my late 40s and weigh 80Kg and the problem is that although my muscles didnt even start to burn very much, my knee joints didnt like it much at the time. And then next day my right knee is very unhappy. I did not go below 90 degrees when doing the leg press (i.e. leg extension).

I had warmed up quite well on a cross trainer for c7 minutes.

- Is lifting weights known to damage joints?
- How and why does the damage happen?
- Is the leg press particularly dangerous for knees?
- Do joints just have "bad days" - when they should be left alone?
- Is doing low reps (e.g. x10 or x5) with heavy weights worse than doing say x15 x20 reps?

I occasionally get a bit of arthritis (see other recent thread) so I know I need to be careful with joints...

Cheers

John
