morning workouts

As I understand it we have a pre workout drink so that carbs can replace glycogen used up during the workout and amino acids will be available immediately to being muscles repairs during/straight after the workout.

I usually work out in the evenings so I presume that glycogen stores will be filled up through my daily eating and I have my pre-workout drink 15 mins or so before working out.

How does this work in the morning? If you get up, have a pre-workout drink and then go to the gym then presumably the drink is needed to replentish glycogen stores depleted through the night, therefore 1) you need to leave longer before working out and 2) you will then use up these glycogen stores in the workout but won't have any carbs to replace them until your post workout drink.

I might be switching to a morning work out routine soon so wanted to find out what the solution is (simply more carbs in the shake?) or whether i'm worrying about nothing and simply aspiring to new heights of posting pointlessness?!

Don't worry, whatever heights you can achieve will certainly be surpassed by one of us sonner or latter.

The solution is more carbs in your shake. Taking protein only with your liver deplenished of glycogen and your brain hungry for glucose will most likely lead to amino acids oxidation.

I usually double the carbs pre workout if I train in the AM. After the over night fast, It seems to really help. I usually train in the late afternoon, so changing it to morning workouts when I have to kind of sucks without the proper nutrition and more warming up.

sounds like plan mate, I don't like working out in the mornings either but i i'm starting a new job and fancy getting the workout out the way before work.

do you leave longer between your shake and your workout in this case?

I usuall try and have it around 30 minutes before I start the actual training. This doesn't include setting up and warm up or anything. So 20 minutes before I go downstairs is pretty standard. I also find that 100-200mg of caffeine with the shake helps a lot. It's most noticable around half way through the workout.
