i eat close to 300g of protien a day as well for a few reasons. it is the muscle macro. all macronutrients play their part in gains but minus the pro and keep the calorie surplus and you may gain but it wont be muscle.
when does muscle gain occur... post w/o, at night, lunchtime, 3:34 in the afternoon. actually its some of these and all of these. who knows exactly when so i eat through out the day and include good quality protien in those meals, chicken, eggs, beef, some milk, some shakes, turkey, cheese etc.
also good quality protien typically comes in "good" food (as mentioned above) and as long as you dont consume too much of one kind (all shake diet or a ton of egg yolks etc) your on to a good diet. add in some veggies, fruit, rice (complex carbs) and some healthy fats and your set. i use the above as a basic frame work for my diet and in doing so i still have the occasional pizza, popcorn, candy, chips, name your favorite junk and it doesnt effect me in the least.
now thats what works for me. my diet used to be more about carbs than pro. but ive gotten some very nice gains with this approach as well as feel (overall health and state of mind) great. its not terribly scientific and im not a nutrient timing zealot but i do believe QUALITY protien thru out the day covers a lot of the bases.others would get more benefit from using those cals for more grams of carbs or healthy fats but thats why there are so many flavors of ice cream........you gotta find the one you like.
good luck
