Russian Twists

My wife and I were recently talking about having low bodyfat and still having a small bit of fat on the sides (love handles).

Now her personal trainer has her doing different forms of twist to her abs routine working the obliques.

I have never done this b/c I have always heard that making the obliques "hypertrophy" gives the illusion of a wide waist.

However I think I remeber reading recently that Russian twists actually bring in the abdominal wall and tighten the midsection.

Do you guys know anything about this?
