How Long should a newbie go

Recently srarted training my brother in law, he had been doing the curls and bench thing on and off ( mostly off) for a few years with no discernable results... I started him on 10x3 alternated with 5x5's 3x/wk and it's been a full month now he's made incredible strength gains and the size is begining to show. I will move him to HST next as the results I've experienced so far are very satisfactory. My question is how long should I keep him going on the program he's on...or, how long in broad general terms should a newb go till thier first "break" or SD. I dont want to change over quite yet to HST as he just started and is excited about his strength gains and is "on task" for now and progressing .
