is caffeine effective at all on its own?

i was wondering if caffeine, by itself, and taken in doses throughout the day would have any effect on fat loss or preserving muscle/strength while dieting.
 
Not as much as it has on performance. Caffeine acts as a phosphodiesterase inhibitor and has some adenosine inhibiting properties. However, its effects on fat loss are minimal when used alone.
