Pure whey protein powder

I've recently started using pure whey protein for my protein shakes. That is, 100% pure, no flavourings, no sweeteners, nothing added at all. I've found a couple of interesting things about it:

- It doesn't taste bad at all. Mixing it with milk, it tastes like richer, milkier milk. Mixing it with water, it tastes vaguely milky, slightly buttery. It reminds me of baked-goods or boiled-milk.

- It's thin. With previous, branded mixes I've tried, I found that 3 scoops of powder makes 500ml of liquid into quite a thick milkshakey drink. Pure whey seems to add almost no "thickness" to the drink. I've put 6 scoops into 500ml of milk, (half for pre-, half for post-workout) and it was still thin and easy chuggable. I'm guessing that the branded blends put ingedients in to thicken the shake, so that it "feels" more potent.

- I haven't had any gastric complaints with it. I think one of the main causes of gastric problems (besides lactose intolerance and the like) is the flavourings/sweeteners. Apparently sugar alcohols (i.e. xylitol and sorbitol), often used as sweeteners, and a component in lots of flavourings, can cause gas and cramps.

- I've had almost no skin problems since using it. I got pretty bad chest and back acne when using some of the other powders.

I add some malto, dextro and flax oil to it. A bit of sweetness makes it more palatable, but as I said before, drinking it plain is fine, too.

I was beginning to wonder if you were drinking just protein, until the end of the post. As for the acne, I'll bet your other stuff had some sugars in it, or something you are allergic to. Which could go away as you get older.
Odd that you said xylitol...I bought a box of it and wonder why people would use it, especially since it's so expensive! To me, it's like adding nothing to a drink; not sweet at all.

I always look for aspartame free whey becuause I don't want a brain tumour or to grow another head but I'm going to try some pure next time. Its probably cheaper too.

Hi ChrisHouston,

Could you maybe list down the powders that gave you acne? I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

The main culprit was Precision Engineered/Body Fortress weight gainer. Their whey protein was also pretty bad for acne. Met-Rx Protein Plus was a little better, but still not great. I'm fairly sure it wasn't the protein per se, but the additives, flavourings, colourings, etc. that were the problem.

Got my pure whey today.
I tried it mixed with water and it seems OK, pleasant tasting. Like CH says its sort of creamy but quite light. I will definitely buy my whey like this from now on. It's loads cheaper too. 2.5 times the weight for the same price where I got mine from.

Where did you get it from? I just bought "100% whey protein" from GNC, which is really 65% protein, about 16% carbs, and other junk I don't want, but was the highest protein content for 3kg. I would love to get 100% pure whey protein if I can get it. How much it cost?

Realise that it can be 100% whey protein, but that does NOT mean that its 100% protein, as whey powder cannot be 100% protein, the highest you will get is ~92% (depending on measurement technique) from ion exchange whey protein isolate.

Did you get concentrate or isolate?

I saw the NZ protein isolate on an Australian site, www.myopure.com.au, it uses micro-filtration instead of ion-exchange, which is supposed to be better, its real cheap too. Its like 92% protein, no added crap. Looks good.

Do you think these numbers refer to the whey content rather than the protein content then?

Heh, that's exactly what I bought.

The bulk whey looks to be the same as the whey protein concentrate 80 (euro), which says it's made by membrane filtration and low temeprature drying.

It's about 80% protein. I've seen higher protein powders, but by pound-per-gram of protein, this stuff's the cheapest.
