Some facts about Pineapple... it is a source of digestive enzymes Bromelain and Betaine. Bromelain breaks down protein, hence it is a natural meat tenderizer. It can also break down blood clots and clean away the dead tissue left by burns, abscesses, ulcers, and various kinds of surgery. In addition, pineapple is a fantastic source of minerals, potassium, chlorine, sodium, phosphorus, sulfur, calcium iron, iodine. It is also rich in vitamin A, B complex and vitamin C.

Does it really increase one's metabolism?

And they're tasty...!

Malaysian pineapple is the best, but Hawaiian is mighty good, too. I've never bothered to read the nutrition label on the side; I just eat and enjoy...

It seems that bromelain is burnt off during the canning process. Anyone know of a brand of pineapple juice that either

a) does not lose bromelain in juicing process
b) is fortified with bromelain

I'm pretty sure I saw something discounting the pineapple theory a long time ago, but I can't find it now. Maybe it was on Lyle's site? I don't remember. Either way, I think pineapples are great regardless of whether they help boost metabolism or not.
Anyway, pretty much all food has some kind of thermic effect, right? I don't know that it would be enough to make a huge difference when dieting, but it is possible... and pineapple tastes great, is a pretty good source of minerals, so it is a worthwhile addition to the diet. Some people report feeling more satiety when including pineapple in their diet, so it could help with restricting calories if you are one of those people.

Colby, why not just buy fresh pineapple and eat it like that? It costs a bit more, but one pineapple should last at least a few days since you don't have a ton of kids living with you yet.

I like pineapple too, but I was considering juice as an alternative to my protein shakes, water and hot tea that I usually drink at work. Regardless of its possible thermodynamic effects, the anti-inflammatory results are very much desired. I am trying to eat more fruit and vegetables, so I'll look into this as a new staple of my diet after the wedding when I can re-evaluate money. Thanks for the input.

If you can find some decent juice, that sounds like it would be a good base to mix in your protein too, if you can get unflavored protein or even vanilla probably wouldn't be too bad.

I use pineapple juice in my post-workout shake.

pineapple juice + vanilla whey + coconut extract = pina colada

Sometimes I chuck in a handful of frozen fruit. very good.
