Rehabbing a sprained ankle & swelling reduction - anyone ... ?

Hey all, per title, has anyone rehabbed a grade 2 or 3 sprained ankle, and//or have any tested info for reducing the lingering swelling?

4 ligaments torn, so the swelling is somewhat significant, mostly on the outside and anterior of the ankle. Rehab is going well in terms of use and movement, but the swelling is proving problematic re: fitting into supportive shoes, which in turn causes pain from pressing against the swelling etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

All the best with that. Sounds nasty. I have a mate that sprained his badly a couple of years ago playing badminton. From memory, I think he had it strapped and then worked on mobility as often as he could once healing was far enough along to allow him to put his weight back on it. I guess it's RICE to begin with but I'm sure you're doing all of that?

Yeh, been there, done it, past that etc.

The issue is that the swelling from scar tissue and residual edema is taking a while to go down. For me, that wouldn't be an issue, but I don't wear heels and focus on footwear as part of my look :p. Just wondering if anyone has any successful rehab techniques with that in mind.

As Lol said, RICE. Even if it's been a while if you still have swelling you should be doing RICE. One of those circulation stockings might help as well.

I rolled my ankle and got a really nasty ankle sprain two years and one month ago that happened while I was playing Futsal. I got an X-Ray that showed that nothing was broken (which surprised me because I'm pretty sure I bent it a full 90°) but I never got an MRI or any other imaging to check for soft tissue damage because I knew that I tore it up bad. It still occasionally hurts today...two + years later. I also still have some limited range of motion and weakness. Most likely it will never again be quite right.

Good luck with you healing.

Interesting. The physio said to use heat now. There was a lot of ice for the first week ofc, RICE & CPR are the two things you never forget from first aid. However, a month later he has the heat going to stimulate//assist blood flow.

Obviously after use or at the end of the day it's still pretty swollen, and she's getting pretty worried about how long it will be swollen etc. Shoes//heels//visual concern thing.

The heat probably isn't a bad idea but if you have done a lot of exercise/walking you should probably ice it as soon as you can and they apply heat a little later. You could try the Cold Hot Cold Hot Cold treatment. That should really get the blood flowing through.

I might force that one through tonight, thanks for the idea :)
