Multiple sets

When doing multiple sets what should you do with the second or third set to make sure you don't reach failure?
I have thought about not going to the prescribed number of reps or lowering the weight. What do you think or is there another option.

Which do you think is best and why?

You can just do however many reps you can, stopping before failure. The second or third set isn't really that important, mostly it's the first set that matters.

However, what I usually do is just stop before failure, rest a moment, then finish the set. So say I'm doing two sets of ten, and on the second set, I get to five and feel failure coming - I'll stop, rest thirty seconds or so, then pump out the last five. If I'm having a particularly hard time, I'll just forget about it and leave the extra sets short.

I wouldn't recommend lowering the weight unless you are doing drop sets.

And you probably don't want me elaborating as to why, it would probably bore you ;)  :D
As Totentanz said, just do what you can.
