Back to Basics

Can't find my straps so no db rows today. So far did 265 x 8, 300 x 5 then 315 x 5 on incline bench. Doing some machine flies now to get some blood flow in the area.

I've never really enjoyed flies, but each to their own. They always left me with tendon soreness where pec meets shoulder.

265 x 5 to 315 x 5 is a ma-hoo-ssive leap! Yeah, I know it was sets across with 265 but what in the heck are you feeding on these days? If you only had a half-decent flat-bench technique you'd be pressing close to four wheels a side! Surely? Anyway, that's pretty awesome. Lack of sun may suck but it doesn't seem to be hurting you any in the weight room.

Re db-rows: I never use straps and I haven't been using a hook-grip either but I guess that's because I'm lifting pansy-ass weights. I'll see if I can build up to using that 86kg db without :)

I've never liked them a whole lot either but all the hammerstrength equipment was in use, and I don't like doing metabolic work with a barbell. I only went up to 110 on the stack for a few sets of 12 so it wasn't too stressful, but I get the same soreness that you describe.

I know it seems like a crazy jump in weight, but I was feeling good on the first set of 265 today, so I figured why not. I think that often times my strength is limits are mental. The even 300 didn't really feel that heavy so I probably could have been working closer to 300 this whole time. 315 wasn't a walk in the park though, the last rep I ended up arching my back quite a bit to get the load back up.
I do intend to get back to flat benching soon and see if I can get the loads up there, seeing as how I just did my PR on flat bench but on an incline and for multiple reps. On the other hand, it does kind of seem like incline is more comfortable for me, so who knows. I could probably flat bench more if I would sack up and just load the plates on there.

Incline is better for leverage angles re: joint approval but doesn't activate the pecs as well, which is why loads are generally 10-15% lower. So the correct angle on incline feels better but isn't quite as strong as your best form flat bench.

Thats weird to me, but then again I can't bench without at least some shoulder impingement, but I can do machine Flyes with 240 lbs for 5 reps, and shoulders feel fine! Every body is different I guess, like fingerprints and snowflakes.

I am hoping you had a spotter!

Thanks guys, I'm feeling a bit rough today so probably going to wait a good week before pushing for more on incline or attempting anything on flat.

No sci, no spotter. So basically it must go back up or else I'm in trouble.

I bet you would really surprise yourself what you could flat bench with a decent spotter.

Well maybe someday I will bring someone with me to spot, if I am feeling adventerous. Otherwise I'll just risk death and push as far as I can.

About to head out to the gym again in a moment here. Feeling pretty good today so maybe I'll try for some new 5 RMs on everything. I've stretched this cycle out forever it seems like, so eventually I'm going to have to reset and build back up. But... still making gains so who knows. I've also been toying with the idea of doing a cut. If I got down to a lean 225 lbs, I think it would look pretty good. And I'm getting tired of having difficulty tying my shoes, washing my back, etc.

In other news, I've seriously been considering just making the switch to metric for all my weights. Pounds are extremely annoying when you are discussing things online, since the US is pretty much the only first world country in the entire world stupid enough to stick to outdated methods of measurement.

Yes, do it. Enjoy having the same system for your micro and macro measurements. And it's not even British, so you aren't losing patriotism points ala if you restored all the missing 'S'es from 'Z'es.

It took me a while to "think" in kgs rather than lbs. The biggest pain for me was training in a gym where they had plates in both kilos and pounds and then mentally converting to kgs after a set of heavy squats or deads. Almost impossible! Now I only have kgs so it's ideal.

We still have lbs and kgs in common use over here. Britain is as messed up as the US in that regard. :)

Hope you got some new 5RMs.

Well I managed 315 x 4 on flat bench, could probably do more but gotta get back into doing it first. Technique wasn't perfect. I probably didn't warm up enough either. 275 for 10 on parallel grip pulldowns. Going to need a good week or two to establish solid rms I think.

The biggest obstacle would simply be whenever I use anything with a stack that are numbered in pounds. All the plates are in pounds and kilograms, so that would be relatively straight forward. I guess for now I'll just use both and notate both in my notebook during my workout until I feel comfortable switching over completely.

I found my missing versa so I plan to do some DB rowing tomorrow. I am glad I found it, wasn't looking forward to shelling out money for another pair.

Thinking of starting legs again. If I do, I'll likely do an upper/lower split four times a week, similar to what was proposed by mikeynov in that thread about hst for advanced trainees. If I start doing squats again, pretty sure I'll have to start off light to toughen my traps back up to be able to hold the loads. Last time I quit squats for a long time, it took a while to get that back. Holding 200 kg on your back when you aren't used to it is hard. Not sure on exercise selection for the rest of my legs. My calves are already 17s so I don't think I'll include any calf work. Not that I've really ever done any calf work anyway, I think it's mostly a waste of time. Maybe romanians for hams.
