Lol's New HST Log

I think you and I are running neck and neck strengthwise overall, but you'll probably take off and leave me unless I hit some PH's or something. I may get back on the Eblockers and see if I feel better again.

26&quot; seems to be what they are when cold. I think there is a fair bit of fat there too. Still, that's a fair bit bigger than they were a few years ago. I am still after my 400lb squat goal but I haven't tried any singles for ages. I'm just a bit too worried to give it a shot without a spotter. I may give it a go in my rack. Rippetoe shows how to dump a weight 'correctly' on a failed attempt in the 2nd Ed. of Starting Strength.

As for other measurements, I haven't taken any in ages. I suppose I ought to do them really. My arms must be hovering somewhere around the 16.5&quot;/17&quot;. I haven't worked them directly in a while now (except for a few tri extensions this cycle) so I'm not expecting any great increases there. Now that my left forearm is getting a lot better I may introduce a few arm isos back into my cycles next year. Once a week would be good to try.

It's a funny thing, but my arms always feel really small to me. I have long muscle bellies in my biceps which makes them look less developed when my arm is straight and I don't have much of a peak when I flex them either. They certainly wouldn't win any contests! I think if I could get them up to 18&quot; they might start to look a little less ordinary so that's my goal for arms.

In my grip workout the other night I managed 30 'click' reps with my No.1 CoC gripper. Admittedly, I didn't open the gripper to it's fullest width each time as my hand is a bit small to get a good set if I let it do that. However, I was pretty pleased with that.

I originally bought my grippers at the beginning of March 07. I just managed one 'click' rep with my right hand that first day. By July I was able to do 20 reps and now I'm up to 30 so progress is still evident. I am still a way off closing the No.3 but the No.2 is becoming less of a challenge, for my right hand at least. My left is lagging a bit so I need to work on that this coming year.

Short jog to the post box and back as a warm-up.

ATG Squats: 10 x 60kg (132lb), 5 x 90kg (198lb), 5 x 110kg (242lb), 5 x 120kg (264lb), 5 x 130kg (286lb), 5 x 140kg (308lb), 5 x 150kg (330lb), 3 x 155kg (341lb), 2 x 160kg (352lb), 1 x 165kg (363lb) PB

Really wanted to try 1 x 170kg (374lb) but decided to save it for another day. I think it is mine but I would like to have a spotter and I'd like to be a bit fresher. Tried a partial squat with it and it was a piece of cake. To think some folks actually squat like that all the time!

One-Arm DB Rows: 15 x 36kg, 10 x 46kg (101lb), 5 x 56kg (123lb), 3 x 5 x 61kg (134lb) last set immediately followed by 5 MS reps per arm, alternating arms each rep.

Interesting: after those last 10 reps I am sweating like I'm drinking tea in the Sahara, yet it's actually pretty cold in my weight room. Also interesting is the fact that I can seemingly lift more with each arm independently than for a Pendlay bb row. My form is OK too; I am touching the db to the floor and bringing it up to touch my body, keeping my back flat. It must be a slightly reduced range of motion compared to Pendlays and/or the muscles involved have a better mechanical advantage because the torso is able to rotate slightly. Using dbs is also equivalent to using a parallel grip which I prefer.

And now for a bucket of food preceded by a gorgeous, 1.5 pint, banana, milk and protein shake. Mmmmm.

Must update my footer to reflect my new squat PB. I don't think it'll last long though.

I think it's similar to the method of taking a knife or gun out of your hand: I'd twist it toward the thumb (the weaker side of the grip) to make the fist open up. So perhaps there is a similarity, having the freedom to twist the DB into a more comforable position for grip strength. Just a supposition.

Interesting analogy from the man with attitude!

Front Squats: 10 x 60kg (132lb), 5 x 80kg (176lb), 5 x 90kg (198lb), 5 x 100kg (220lb), 5 x 110kg (242lb), 2 x 120kg (264lb), 2 x 125kg (275lb) PB, 1 x 130kg (286lb) PB

Bench: 10 x 60kg (132lb), 5 x 80kg (176lb), 5 x 90kg (198lb), 5 x 100kg (220lb), 5 x 3 x 110kg (242lb)

Pretty pleased with the front squats. I think I could have managed 135kg but decided to be happy with 130kg for this cycle. That's a 22lb increase over last cycle plus I did a double with 120kg (my PB from last cycle) and a double with 125kg.

I should make a 300lb front squat next cycle.

Can't they be harder on the back at the weights you're using?
Pretty impressive!</div>
They actually feel easier on the back (for me, anyway) because you have to use less weight for the same RM as you would doing a back squat. Also, your torso has to remain in a more upright position throughout the movement so there is less strain felt on your lower back (ie. there's less of a moment from the load); this forces you to really tighten all your core muscles or you will dump the weight.

What I didn't say in my log last night was that when I tried for 5 reps with 110kg the first time, I did a pretty large fart coming out of the hole during the second rep which really cracked me up. Turns out it's much harder to re-rack the bar when you are laughing in a front squat position than when it's nice and secure behind your neck. You have been warned!

Tues 25/12/07

Did some light power cleans for warmups.

Parallel Grip Chins: 5, 4, 7 x 3 x bw+20kg (44lb) - 30 total reps - two more sets of 3 than last time.

Standing Press: 10 x 40kg, 5 x 50kg, 5 x 60kg (132lb), 5 x 70kg (154lb), 3 x 72.5kg (160lb)

Push Press: 3 x 75kg (165lb), 3 x 80kg (176lb)

Shoulders felt stronger tonight not having benched just beforehand.

Thurs 27/12/07

Just some deads tonight. Haven't done proper deads for a while now so wasn't sure how I would fare. Well...

Deads: Warmups then 5 x 160kg regular grip but with thumbs hooked, then singles or doubles up to 190kg followed by... 1 x 205kg (451lb) for a new PB!

Nice way to end a cycle. I'll have to update my footer again.

Knew you were gonna blow on by me! I just pulled 405 today and thot I was doing a bit of something until I read your log.
First the squats, now the deads.
Blah.

Fri 28/12/07

Bench: 10 x 60kg (132lb), 5 x 80kg (176lb), 5 x 90kg (198lb), 5 x 100kg (220lb), 5 x 110kg (242lb), 3 x 112.5kg (247lb), 3 x 2 x 115kg (253lb)

That's my best benching in a long while and my right AC joint is so much better than it has been in over a year. It's still not as solid as the left side and may never be, but I feel like I have a chance at cracking 300lb if it stays this good. My new goal for bench is now 275lb for at least one rep.

Heheh, at least I got ya in bench! I have the same AC joint issue, as you know, and I've made it back to 315lbs. - hoping to hit my old 350PB someday.
Isn't it just fun, living with pain?

Why don't you keep a log Quad?
Everyone looks up to you here at HST, and you are really an inspriation like Lol and others.

BTW, your bench and rows are personal inspirations along with your HST mass!
