Lol's New HST Log

Do you think there's a difference between wearing lifting shoes and barefoot? Some serious nice lifting the last couple weeks LOL. Overhead squats and press from the hole-nice. Is the snatch in the near future if the shoulder holds up?

Hopefully, if I'm careful it won't flare up and spoil the rest of this cycle.</div>
Wise! There's no point in cultivating an injury. Forced SDs are no fun and no profit.

Time to try out the new Oly shoes (size 10.5s arrived today):

Started with some overhead squats with 40kg for warmups. My right shoulder seems to really hate OHS but I'll keep working on them as long as the shoulder doesn't get worse.

Then I tried a bunch of squat cleans with 40kg up to 60kg to try to get a feel for it. I improved a bit but lots more work required to get this movement down.

Snatch: 5 x 60kg – I suspect I have terrible technique but it was easy to lift, so what the hey.

Clean &amp; Jerk: 5 x 60kg, 5 x 70kg, 5 x 80kg (176lb)

Had to stop there as my left arm was really starting to bother me. Judging by how quickly the problem flared up again, I would say it was definitely the cleans that sparked this problem off. In the words of Dick Dastardly, &quot;Drat, drat and double drat!&quot;

RDLs: 5 x 110kg (242lb), 5 x 130kg (286lb), 3 x 5 x 140kg (308lb) - all with double-overhand hook grip and right down to weights touching floor each rep.

Power Shrugs: 2 x 20 x 140kg - decided to add these in to finish up - what a burn.

Shins bleeding, thumbs crushed, arm aching; no pain, no gain!

At least the Oly shoes have settled in a bit and feel more comfortable already.

++++++++++++

Bax: Thanks mate. I will be doing some snatching (as you can see). I need to improve my technique before I can push the loads up. Also, I have to be careful with snatches as I am more likely to dump the bar than when cleaning; I don't have a lot of space if the bar goes behind me.

Tunnel: I quite agree but I think I may have exacerbated the situation a bit this evening. Doh!

Lol, interesting SSTish training style going on.</div>
Only size 14, but I have wide feet for some reason... I can't imagine how hard it would be to find shoes with size 18. It's hard enough for me to find shoes right now with a whole three different pairs to choose from in most stores.

Holy crap. 308 all the way to the floor on RDLs is insane.

I think there's a fair bit left in the tank for RDLs so I hope to be pushing them up over the next few weeks, if I don't injure myself along the way.

Yup, I keep learning by reading your log (and those of others here). I have been emboldened to increase the weight on my RDLs up past my body weight. I find that by the 8th rep or so I, too, am making it all the way down to the floor.

Fri 29/02/08

ATG Squats: 10 x 60kg, 5 x 110kg, 5 x 140kg (308lb), 5 x 145kg (319lb), 3 x 5 x 150kg (330lb)

First night squatting in Oly shoes. Worked great.

On the last set my form suffered a fair bit. I went as deep as always but found myself leaning forward more than I should coming out of the hole. Never done three sets in a row with 150kg before though, so maybe I can be forgiven.

Will have to do the rest tomorrow. I haven't eaten at all well today and need food.

Sat 01/03/08

Press: 10 x 40kg, 5 x 50kg, 5 x 60kg (132lb)

Push Press: 4 x 5 x 70kg (154lb)

Started off doing 70kg for strict presses but then my left arm started to play up and so I switched to push presses for the remaining sets. Probably wasn't wise to do them at all.

I decided to stop after those as the discomfort in my arm was increasing. I now think the problem is not my biceps tendon insertion at all but is most likely the distal tendon insertion of the brachialis and the proximal end of my brachioradialis insertion too. This makes more sense as I get pain at the lowest position at the start of the press when my elbows are in the most flexed position. Slight strains in these areas are likely from the fast second pulls during cleaning and possibly also from getting my racking not quite right on a few occasions so that the load comes to rest on the arms (because I didn't raise my elbows high enough) and not my shoulders.

My experience is that this pain will niggle away at me and just get worse if I do any more cleans this cycle. I will try to keep going with my other upper body work and see how I get on. If it refuses to improve I'll be forced to just continue with mainly leg work for the rest of this cycle. Anyway, I have a rest day tomorrow and I'll go carefully on Monday.

Week 8

Mon 03/03/08

To give my poor old beaten up body a bit of a breather I just did some light front squats last night and a grip workout.

Front Squats: 3 x 10 x 70kg (154lb) - very strict form and not much rest between sets for which I was rewarded with a nice pump.

Left arm is feeling a bit better so tomorrow I'll try some heavier stuff again.

Well then, I'm happy to have been almost sort of having tried to be nearly some distant form of disrelated assistance after the fact. Enjoy.

And I'm happy that you're happy to have been almost... er... all of that!

Wed 05/03/08

No deads or cleans today to give my left arm a bit more of a chance to heal.

Dips: 15 x bw, 5 x bw+20kg (44lb), 10 x bw+40kg (88lb), 4 x 5 x bw+40kg (88lb)

Parallel Grip Chins: 5 x bw, 20(MS) x bw+20kg (44lb), 5 x bw

Upright Rows: 15 x 31kg (68lb), 5 x 41kg (90lb), 5 x 51kg (112lb), 5 x 61kg (134lb), 3 x 5 x 66kg (145lb)

Left arm feels pretty good after that lot so by next week I should be able to try some cleans again.

Fri 29/02/08

ATG Squats: 10 x 60kg, 5 x 110kg (242lb), 5 x 140kg (308lb), 5 x 150kg (330lb), 1 x 160kg (352lb), 1 x 170kg (374lb), 1 x 180kg (396lb) PR , 0 x 182.5kg (401.5lb)!, 10 x 110kg (242lb)

Well, that was a bit of fun! Thought I would try for a max as I felt pretty good after the first set with 150kg. I got 180kg but didn't get 182.5kg. I should have called it quits after the 180kg. Coming out of the hole was OK but then I stalled and wasn't going anywhere. I actually did a good morning and dropped the weight over my head! Lucky to get away with just a scrape along my neck. Did a set of 10 with 110kg after that to see if everything was OK. Seems to be. Next time I'll try a max inside my rack which is, after all, why I got the thing. Too bad I didn't get a vid. That would have been one for YouTube but I think I would have had to disable comments!
biggrin.gif

So I live to fight another day and have a new PR to show for my efforts (33lb more than my previous best). Everything else is pretty sore still from Wednesday night so I'll do the rest tomorrow.

nice lift LOL.

i think i would have let the bar go off my back and bailed out by standing up......rather quickly. seems like a &quot;better&quot; option then letting that amount of wgt go over my head but........ive gotten caught unexpectedly in lifts before and you typically dont have time to consider options, just react, rightly or wrongly.

anyway, 180kg. again nice lift

So close! So very close...!

Before long you will own that big four oh oh.

Thanks guys. Yep, I know I can do it now. It didn't feel too bad either but I do think the 396lb lift took more out of me than I thought and then I didn't wait long enough before trying for 401.

Blue: I would have dumped the bar behind me but I had a mate there who was going to be spotting me (only it turned out that he didn't!) and I didn't want to drop it on him. I should have dived forward into the low pins but I just couldn't think about it at the time. I pretty much did a Good Morning with 401lb and then just kept on going!
