Lol's New HST Log

I've thoroughly appreciated your wisdom and insight, Lol. All the best. And for what it's worth--as a career military guy I know plenty of people with a very high quality of life who are living with multiple missing parts. Stay tough, and good luck to you!

Hullo good people! Thanks for your kind words.

As of this morning, I'm now officially Stage IV malignant melanoma. Nice! I suspect a good deal of my remaining time will be spent fighting this long standing foe in one way or another but I will endeavour to train wherever and whenever possible.

Over the last few days I did a whole bunch of stuff. Highlight for me was:

Deadlift:
Warmups
5 x 400lb @ RPE 9

Nothing to write home about, load wise, but certainly the first time I've deadlifted this heavy for reps since my hernia op. No burning sensation afterwards either.

I'll need to get this up to at least 8 reps to give me a good chance of achieving a 500 pull.

I'm also going to be making an effort to tackle more metcons. Got to ease myself back in and thought this would be a good way to start...

Metcon:
5 rounds for time of 5 Chins, 10 Push-ups, 15 Air-squats
Time: 4m 20s

Attempted to keep a steady (but not fast) pace. No breaks. Lungs working hard but felt good after that.

If you are on the road or away from a gym, this is a great metcon. The Crossfit Rx'd version is for 15 rounds. 5 was plenty this time around.

Keep it shiny side up!

5 x 400 is nothing to write home about? Perahaps that's true over the pond, but here in the States it's a great session for an amateur, non-competitive lifter.

I read a bit about the battle that you're fighting - and though I know it's not an easy road to travel, you stand a great chance at having a great go at a 500 pound pull even if it takes you a bunch of years to get there. Heck - maybe you'll rep with 500 and pass it off as nothing to write home about. I would not put such a thing past you, Lol.

Oh - and just so you know, I'm going to beat you to a 300 pound bench single. Whether or not you realize it, IT'S ON.

Excellent stuff Tim!

Yesterday, for dips I did an easy 5 x 5 x bw+77lb and tonight I did a fairly straightforward bench session of 3 x 5 x 105kg (231lb). Left shoulder was okay for both. Based on that, I'll estimate that my bench 1RM is currently around 270/275. I'll take a day off tomorrow (well, I might do a metcon) and then I'll attempt a higher volume bench session with 105kg.

Edit: Where are you with your bench right now?

I'd guess that I'm at about 250 or 260 for a single right now. I'm going to start upping the loads a bit in about a week or so, with singles testing happening 6-7 weeks from the start of the new cycle.

Sat 26/06/10

Did a spot of benching this morning following on from a session of squats and cleans last night.

Flat Bench:
10 x 60kg, 5 x 80kg WU
5 x 100kg
5 x 105kg
5 x 110kg (242lb) @ RPE 9.5
4 x 110kg (242lb) @ RPE 9
4 x 110kg (242lb) @ RPE 9

Push-ups (elevated feet) for metabolic work:
25 x bw - chest to floor

Wraps for all work sets.

Again, that puts me at around 270-275 1RM. If I had made the sixth rep with 242 that would equate with ~280 1RM. Not good enough... yet! I have to aim for 120kg (265lb) x 5 to be sure of a 300lb bench.

I was best man for a good mate at his wedding on Monday. Got him into training about a year ago and now he is doing very well. He'll certainly have no problem carrying his missus over the threshold!

Stopped off at my folks on return journey and had a blat on my pop's C2 rower today.

Session highlight:

500m C2 Row: 1m:27.5s - PR

Although that was technically a PR, it's only the second time I have tried this in anger. I went off a bit too hard at the start but just managed to hold it together for the last 100m. I wanted to beat my previous 1m:31s. Job done.

New target to beat 1m:25s.

Best 500m row vid I can find:

I think that's 1m:13.7s!! Insane!

Just missed a bw+75kg (165lb) dip this evening. That would have been a PR. Current bw is 210lb.

Dips:
10 x bw
5 x bw+20kg
5 x bw+40kg
1 x bw+50kg (110lb)
1 x bw+60kg (132lb)
1 x bw+65kg (143lb)
1 x bw+70kg (154lb)
0 x bw+75kg (165lb)

Deads:
10 x 60kg
5 x 110kg
5 x 140kg
5 x 150kg
5 x 150kg
10 x 150kg (330lb) @ RPE 8

Hook grip; no belt; oly shoes.

Might well have been able to get 15 reps on that last set if I had needed to.

Four trainees tonight so less time for me. I also need more training gear: extra bars and more plates.

C&Js tomorrow.

Lol, do you use a loading pin to hold all those plates on dips or do you hold them the regular way looping the chain through the eyes of the plates?

I use a regular leather weight belt and chain. It's not a great design: three pieces of leather, riveted together. I had to strengthen it after the first lot of rivets gave up and the original clip had to be replaced by a proper carabiner. For heavy dips/chins I use 25kg plates which helps to reduce how many plates I have to use.

Metcon session outside in the sun.

CF Grace: (30 x ground to overhead with 135lb for time)

First 10 reps in 00:40.8
Next 10 reps in 01:21.8
Last 10 reps in 01:44.7

Total time: 03:47.3

For this WOD I did clean and jerks. First 10 reps were unbroken then I rested a few seconds, 5 more reps, rest, 3 more, rest, 2 more. Last 10 reps were broken into singles and doubles, with a last effort triple at the end.

Lungs were on fire, as they always are after a metcon. All reps were good. Jerks were easy compared to the cleans - even with a duff right shoulder.

I don't know if 3:47.3 is a rubbish time or not but, as it's the first time I've done Grace properly, it's a PR for me. :)

Haven't squatted in ages due to right knee feeling a bit sore. It's been feeling a bit better so thought I'd try a few sets.

Paused Low-bar Squats:
10 x 60kg, 5 x 110kg WU
5 x 140kg (308lb) @ RPE 8
5 x 140kg (308lb) @ RPE 8.5
5 x 140kg (308lb) @ RPE 9

Oly shoes; no belt.

Sheesh! They were a lot harder than I had hoped. Tried to keep my form as tight as possible. Knee doesn't seem to be any worse now.

Tue 06/07/10

Metcon:

5 rounds of 5 x 70kg (154lb) Power Cleans and 10 x Burpees for time

Rd 1: 00:53.7
Rd 2: 01:32.1
Rd 3:
Rd 4: 04:16.3 (combined for rounds 3 & 4 as missed lap timer button after round 3)
Rd 5: 01:40.7

Total Time: 08:22.8

Painful on the old lungs. Had to take almost 30 seconds to try to recover breath after each round which added a lot to my time after the first round. Breathing like a train afterwards but asthma held off and I recovered reasonably quickly.

I would have liked to have tried this metcon with C&Js but it was late and I didn't think my neighbours would appreciate the noise had I dumped the bar. Next time.

Also did some curls whilst at a friend's:

BB curls:
2 x 5 x 55kg (121lb)

As any who have read my training log over the last few years will know, I have metastatic melanoma - the worst kind of skin cancer. I am going to fight this thing to the bitter end and am right now having to wrestle with the NHS to try to get to see the right people and to get good answers to my questions and to get the best possible treatment/management plan figured out for my disease.

A new tumour grew on my right elbow just this week (it happens scarily fast), so now I have three. My PET scan next week should show up any smaller metastases not shown up on my recent CT scans. This will help with treatment following surgery but may well be useful in determining how radical my imminent surgery should be.

A competitor at the 2009 Crossfit Games, Amanda Miller, lost her fight against melanoma earlier this year. Her blog can be found here: http://amandaredmiller.blogspot.com/. It really didn't take long for the cancer to get out of control and take her life.

In memory of Amanda, Dave Lipson, the owner/founder of the new CrossFit Exodus in Manhattan, is on a 365 day squat challenge to raise awareness for skin cancer (specifically melanoma).

Here are the rules that Dave has set for himself:

I must squat below parallel at least 450 lbs on the bar for a minimum of 1 rep every day. Some days squatting will only be the warmup for a single or double in conjunction with other work, other days the squats will be for work sets. Either way my axial skeleton will feel that weight through the system.

Quite a challenge! This is going to be 365 consecutive days of squatting. I love Dave's attitude. He is currently at day 43 and still going strong. In the last few weeks he's pushed his daily squat to 475 lbs for a single.

Here is a link to his blog: http://365daysofsquatting.blogspot.com/

In his most recent post to date on Thursday 8th July 2010, Dave lists his various lifting improvements that have come about through squatting alone!

Before / After

Bench: 350 / 378

Press: 215 / 231

Deadlift: 600 / 650

2k Row: 6:31 / 6:28

This is already turning out to be a very interesting experiment. It might be expected that there would be a strength transfer to deads but even Dave's bench and press have improved (by 8% and ~7.5% respectively)! More significantly, Dave is making these improvements as a seasoned lifter. I haven't yet asked Dave whether or not his bw has changed over the first 43 days of his challenge.

I have been thinking about doing something along similar lines to Dave but I am nowhere near as big and buff as Dave so it will be a much less impressive challenge. I wondered if I might be able to manage at least a 365 lb squat single each day for, hopefully, at least 365 days. It will most likely be impossible for me to do this on consecutive days due to surgery and recovery time but I can still aim to make it to 365 days of squatting (and beyond!).

I'm pretty sure my strength has dipped over the past few weeks so I need to get under the bar and see how 365 lb feels right now.

Watch this space...

Squat a minimum of 365 lb for a minimum of 365 days

This is my own personal challenge for the foreseeable future. I'll aim to get the squats and then either do another exercise or perhaps a metcon. Some days I'll just squat for minimal volume which will be like a day off.

Day 1
Sat 10/07/10

Low-bar Squats:
10 x 60kg, 5 x 90kg, 5 x 110kg WU
1 x 140kg (308lb) @ RPE 8
1 x 165kg (364lb) @ RPE 9.5
1 x 167.5kg (369lb) @ RPE 9.5

Oly shoes; no belt.

165kg is just shy of 364lb but with collars it's over 365lb. I decided to round it up to 167.5kg. This seemed like almost a max effort but I hope my strength picks up again so I might be able to get doubles or triples as time goes on.

Chins:
10 x bw, 5 x bw+10kg, 5 x bw+15kg WU
5 x bw+20kg (44lb)
5 x bw+25kg (55lb)
5 x bw+25kg (55lb)
5 x bw+25kg (55lb) @ RPE 10

Last rep of final set was hard.

364 days to go!

Dave Lipson recommended 75-80% 1RM as a target load for daily squatting. That makes sense for a long-term challenge like this and would see me lifting closer to 315-330lb each day. I don't want to fry my CNS (immune response is often suppressed if the CNS is put through high levels of stress on a regular basis - bad for fighting cancer) so I will see how I get on this first week. If I find my RPE for 365lb hits a 10 then I'll drop back to 160kg (352lb) and see how I get on with that. If that still proves to be too much for a daily dose I'll cut back to 150kg (330lb). I don't want to have to go below that.

Squat a minimum of 365 lb for a minimum of 365 days - Day 2

Legs a bit sore but nothing too bad. Lower volume today. I just want to get the top weight.

Lunges and dislocates for warmups.

Low-bar Squat:
5 x 60kg, 3 x 90kg, 3 x 110kg WU
1 x 140kg (308lb) @ RPE 8
1 x 165.5kg (365lb) @ RPE 9

Oly shoes; no belt.

365 felt easier than yesterday. Lower volume should help.

EZ-bar front raises:
25 x 29kg (64lb)

Bar taken from thighs to overhead. Close grip and with a little hip flexion.

I'm doing these to simulate kettlebell swings. Can't go as low with the bar but it'll do.

Jump-rope:
5 mins

Went until calf burn was unbearable. :)

Squat a minimum of 365 lb for a minimum of 365 days - Day 3

Mon 12/07/10

Low volume again.

Lunges and dislocates for warmups.

Low-bar Squat:
10 x 60kg, 3 x 90kg, 5 x 110kg WU
1 x 140kg (308lb)
1P x 165.5kg (365lb) @ RPE 9
1P x 165.5kg (365lb) @ RPE 9

Oly shoes; no belt.

Brief pauses for both 365 lifts. Cool. :)

Some CoC gripper work.

Squat a minimum of 365 lb for a minimum of 365 days - Day 4

Tue 13/07/10

Busy day. Lack of sleep and residual soreness from yesterday left me feeling less than keen to squat tonight. Never mind.

Lunges and dislocates for warmups.

Low-bar Squat:
10 x 60kg, 5 x 90kg, 5 x 110kg WU
1 x 140kg (308lb)
1 x 165.5kg (365lb) @ RPE 9

Oly shoes; sans-belt.

Forgot to add that I did 2 x 30 x air squats as fast as possible, full ROM as a warm down. Great for quad burn.
