MS Overload, Workout 33

Flat Bench: Max Lift - Missed 275 (neg. w/325)
Deadlifts: Max Lift - 375
Pullups/Chins with b/w only

15 Mins. cardio

NOTES: On the plus side, I was very pleased with my deadlift effort. It's the first time I've deadlifted in a few months, and it's an exercise I've missed terribly. The bench, however, is still giving me fits. I'm going to refrain from attemping 275 for the next month or so, and just work on negatives. I may have to get up to around 340 to be able to do 275. Ah, well, nothing worth having is ever easy.

Thanks, fellas. I may compete in a p/lifting torney in November...I have to see how I progress until then.

MS Overload, Workout 34

Flat Bench: Max Lift - negatives with 335 ***new pb, for what it's worth
Deadlifts: Max Lift - 385
Pullups/Chins: b/w only

15 Mins. cardio

NOTES: Pretty pleased with the effort today. 385 was definitely much tougher than 375 was last week. I may have to take upwards of 7 days b/4 my next attempt. As far as bench, it sure was fun to see 335 hanging over my head. The descent was pretty controlled until about the last 6 inches. Hopefully that darned 275 is in my near future.

MS Overload, Workout 35

Flat Bench: 245 - 5 (MS)
Deadlifts: 355 - 5 (MS)
Pullups/Chins: b/w only

15 Mins. cardio
NOTES: Was on an SD of sorts because I spent the weekend in South Carolina not training and basically eating like caca. So, I'm going to spend a couple workouts building myself back up b/4 gunning for the big weights again. It sure felt good to get back at it.

MS Overload, Workout 36

Flat Bench: 255 - 5 (MS)
Deadlifts: 390 - 1
One-armed pullups: 3 each arm

10 Mins. cardio

NOTES: Extremely satisfied with this effort today. Man, there's nothing like a max effort deadlifting. It is, bar none, the most invigorating exercise there is, at least for me.

I've also just found a new movement to focus on for awhile....one-armed pullups. I can't do that many yet, but I really felt the entire left & right side of my upper body come into play in a way that regular weighted chins never have, even when I was adding 125 pounds to my bodyweight. I guess there's something to be said for training the left side & right side individually at times.

Flaming butt weasels, Slapz! One-arm pullups are impossibly hard. Most folks who attempt them are extremely lean and have legs like a chicken's! And you did 3 with each arm!

And with a 390 lb. deadlift, it is not likely he's got legs like chicken...

Heck, in the thread about grip strength, we've got folks reporting that they can't even hold on with one hand, let alone do a pullup!

Nice work, Slapz. Flaming butt weasels, indeed!

Insane. Great, great stuff, Slapz. I can't imagine doing single-arm pullps; you've just given me a new goal.

Thanks - I think.

Are you happy with your overall progress thus far?

Thanks, guys! Lol, you've just given me my new favorite saying....Flaming butt weasels...been using it all week

I sure wish I could participate around here more and keep closer tabs on everyone's journals, but updating my log is all I have time for these days...hopefully the fall will give me some more time.

Anyhoo, onto today's efforts...

MS Overload, Workout 37

Flat Bench: 255 - 4 (MS), plus 1 @260
Deadlifts: 405 - 1
One-armed pullups: 4 right arm, 3 left arm

no cardio

NOTES: Went back to my gym today for the first time in @ 3 months, and I think I'm going to switch back to there for awhile. It seems kinda silly, but I feel like I need some chicks walking around in skimpy clothes to fuel further strength gains. Don't get me wrong, I find working out in my basement very motivating b/c no one bothers me, and I can scream as loud as I have to, but it's time for a change in scenery.

Was very happy with my efforts today. I really felt as if 275 on bench was possible, but I didn't push it b/c I needed energy in the tank for the deads & one-arm pullups. Seems I'm averaging 1 strength session per week, and 1 or 2 cardio days sandwiched in between.

Tried something else, too....most of you know I'm a lifetime low carber, but I tried to load up in the last 24 hours b/4 my workout, and it seemed to pay off. Unfortunately, I did so by eating pizza the night before, which isn't the best choice, but I allow myself one or two cheat meals a week....so it might as well be something that can carb me up, too.

I have found that the infrequent training sessions really allow me to go balls to the wall. The overtraining strategy I tried failed miserably, as it left me lethargic, irritable, and unable to get proper sleep at night. Maybe it's my age

All in all, I'm very happy with my progress. I think the fall will produce some new highs in strength, and hopefully I'll maintain my leanness in the process.

My story:

I've had a really horrible month, health wise...and some of it (perhaps all of it) was my fault.

About 3,4 weeks ago, I woke up one morning to find I couldn't get out of bed. I was having such severe muscle pain that I literally couldn't move. The pain was on the outside of both my legs, as well as the inner parts of my arms. I also had zero grip strength, and when I did try to grab something, my hands would shake.

Scared shitless, my wife called our doctor, and he told me to come in immediately. It took about 2 hours for me to get out of bed, get dressed and get to the doctor. My doctor is 5 minutes from my house.

When I got there, he was very grave looking. He feared some type of sudden onset neurological muscular disorder. Now, I was really panicked. I saw my life flash b/4 my eyes...my 2 year old son being 16 and seeing a father who couldn't walk anymore. I was thinking horrible, horrible thoughts.

So anyway, as I'm getting ready to leave the room, the doctor askes, almost as an afterthought, "Do you take creatine, by any chance?" I told him yes, that I'd been taking a maintenance dose for several months now, about a teaspoon a day or so. He told me to cut out the creatine...immediately...and see if symptoms don't improve in a couple days.

Sure enough, in 24 hours the pain was cut by half, and by the following week, it had disappated completely. Turns out, I was suffering from creatine toxicity.

This is one of those lessons I only need to learn one time...my supplement days are over. Creatine is one of the most studied and "considered safe" supplements out there...and yet, look what happened to me.

So, I manage to get over that hurdle, and then my body, already in a weakened state, gets hit with an upper respiratory infection. I'm just about recovering from that, and then, of course, I had to go to my friend's bachelor party, which consisted of a 24-hour booze cruise out of New York.

That cruise was Saturday into Sunday, and now, of course, I have a wicked cough and feel TOTALLY in the $hitter. I drank way too much, gambled way too much, slept way too little, and now am suffering for that. (It WAS a great time, though
laugh.gif
)

So, long story short, I haven't worked out nearly as much as I would have liked, but I did manage to hit my goal of a 275 bench last week, and hit a 415 deadlift today
smile.gif
I'm sure I'll be paying for it all week, but today, I wasn't gonna let ANYTHING get in the way of a solid gym day, despite my feeling like complete rat $hit. Here's the highlight summary of the last two workouts.

MS Overload, Workout 38,39

Flat Bench: 275 - 1
Deadlifts: 415 - 1
One-armed pullups: a couple per arm

I'm confused. How is it possible to drink, gamble, and sleep too much...?

Good grief Slapz! That's a real shocker. Never heard of a reaction like that before. Glad your Doc thought to ask you.

This article has some interesting thoughts on and pointers to possible contaminants in creatine supplements:
Creatine side-effects

Hope you are as right as rain again soon - which you will be if those lifts are anything to go by. I see more PBs ahead.

Hey Slapz -

You know, it's bad that it happened, but at least you know now how you react to creatine. That stuff messed with my heart the last time I took it, and that was it for me. I hope you are able to recover from what sounds like an insanely fun weekend soon.

Some bad stories in regards to side effects of creatine are appearing more and more often from members on this board. Slapz, it's good to hear that it was only a scare. Are you cutting out all supplements including protein powder and fish oil if you take it?

BTW, I am posting a side effects / stories thread for creatine in the supplements forum.

Thanks for the great responses, guys.

Tim, I think my ticker would have been affected eventually had I not stopped, which is REALLY scary. And LOL, I never knew about - or thought to question - the fact that the creatine could be contaminated. Heck, you could say that about anything you might buy at these "health food" stores.

Colby, I still continue to take protein powder. With my low carb diet, it is just too hard to get in "x" number of calories per day without it. Am I playing Russian Roulette? I hope not, but jeez, if I had to cut out the protein powder, I dunno what I'd do for calories.

In any event, I'm feeling about 90%, and plan on having a big gym day on Sunday, God willing.

Thanks again, all, for your great comments!

The creatine experience is certainly a shocker , what brand were you taking? I've read some studies that found impurities of some sort in some creatines (brands) that morph to a type of cyanide in the body but never took them too seriously (before now anyway) , glad to see you made it through OK.

I don't see anything wrong with protein powder. It's just whey which isn't a supplement at all - it's a food!

BTW, could you copy your story onto the Creatine Side Effects thread? It had a profound effect on me which is why I started that thread.
