Hi,

I'm new to this website and forum. I hope I'm not repeating.

I've just started working out according to HST ideology, and also just started to take my eating seriously.

I'm trying to eat about 158 g protein
and 2740 cals daily
for bulking
(stats: I weigh about 158lbs and I'm thin)

The thing is at the end of the day I usually end up with about 170 or 180 g protein, and I usually just make it on calories or over shoot or under shoot by about 50-100.

Is extra protein "bad"?
or rather will it hinder me at all?

1 to 1.5 grams protien per lb of body weight is what most shoot for so your fine. just dont consistantly drop below 1 to 1.

how did you arrive at 2740? its @bwx17 so its a good place to start but if the scale is not moving then its too little. if your 158, thin, over 18, and over 5'9" chances are your going to need more cals to grow but who knows. track your intake as best you can and when your gaining @ 1lb a week then stick with that ratio (say bwx18-20) rather then a number (2740). it will help you stay on track as you gain wgt.

also, there are numerous previous threads in the diet/nutrition section from others who have struggled with gaining wgt/muscle. read thru as many as you can, it may seem like a lot of reading at first but you will quickly find most are making the same 2-3 common mistakes/miscalculations that make all the difference.

good luck

I believe I got that number from a formula on this website, I can't find it now. But first I found my maintaining cals and then plugged it in to some formula....

Your maintenance cals will differ from ANY formula by your personal metabolism, energy expenditure (work), sleep, and what you're using FOR cals. I'm of the club that believes good food (high GI index) is better than eating empty cals.
You just have to monitor yourself. If you're not gaining and want to, (1 lb./wk) then add cals by 250-500. Reverse that for cutting.

1-1.5g of protein per lb of bodyweight is fine. If you are bulking, I'd make it 1.5 per lb....BUT....drink LOTS of water. Drink at least 1 gallon per day, and that doesn't include water that might be included in other drinks.

I agree with this entire post. You need to eat more than that.

thank you for all the calorie advice. In response to blue jacket, I'm 6 ft, 26yo, have been around 160 for a little bit now.

I guess I have one lingering question. What if you end up with an excess of protein in your diet? is it bad/detrimental?

it all depends on what you mean by excess.
no one knows exactly how much pro any 1 person uses to grow muscle and serve with other body functions at any given time. most eat to make sure we never run a deficit since muscle growth is the main goal and therefore typically are in pro excess with no ill effects.

now if you take in too much pro. at the expense of fats and carbs which are just as important thats were you would get in trouble.

perhaps someone with more nutrition science knowledge could explain it better then i.

good luck

Basically any protein your body doesn't use to build muscle or other things it does with amino-acids, it uses a hormone called glucagon (opposing hormone to insulin), to break it down into glucose, and if unburned, turns into fat. Some experts think that excess protein can affect the kidneys, but there is no scientific proof of this.

Glucagon and insulin aren't produce together in the body (hence opposing/antagonistic). Glucagon is a catabolic hormone, while insulin is an anabolic hormone, and as you want your body to be anabolic as much as possible, eating a mixure of low GI carbs and protein will give you better growth than lots of protein with little/no carbs.
